maybe the guy was just tired of life and wanted to go out in a blaze of glory...and didnt want to die alone. Kind of a spectacular way to bow out of life.

Sad that so many are/will be affected by his actions. Hugs to you all

I used to practice with Tim Howard in high school.

They hired a goalkeeping coach for him and couldn't justify it for only the boys team. So he and I practiced together for a whole season.

Even then I knew he was going far.

Ok you're right I shouldn't have said "freak". Sorry; I tend to use coarse terminology sometimes. I'm from the construction world where there's no HR department and if there was they'd faint.
I just don't remember everyone letting it ruin the whole event when someone did the same thing (different method) at Burning Man in '07. Hell the only big news that year was Addis.
But yeah it's very sad and tragic that the guy considered his circumstances so shitty he chose to give up.

*pokes head in door, looks around.*

Hey all, first time stopping by this lovely establishment you have here. I had some crazy dreams about the playa last night and it's got me feeling kinda homesick (more so than usual, anyway). Figured stopping by here for a nice cup of tea might lift my spirits a bit.

The one difference is this is a small event of 1200 plus the local civilians who support us annually and are just as much burners as we are. We all know each other, even if it is on a tangent. Also, this act was done front and center in front of most of the community attending at the height of burn night. Very different than a private act most of us heard about second hand. It ruined far more than just the event for many salt burners, and will take time and healing for quite a few. The effects are devastating to those who did not attend, as they knew the young man, and had to hear about this via social media. I'm still a bit explodey myself.

It's people using words like "freak" that gives metal health issues their stigma, that stigma then makes it harder for people to deal with their issues and get the help they need that could prevent this kind of thing. Please have some compassion and don't make this situation worse.
Thank you, Jovenkat.

Bon fete nationale. Happy Bastille Day, like our Fourth of July... but not. July 14, 1789, I think.

I find it ironic that France is celebrating today when Germany conquered the world yesterday, nicht var ?

A united Germany is again a world player, industries making a strong economy comeback. France, not so much.

P.S. Lafayette's ship Hermione is almost repaired and will visit the East coast soon.

...Setting up the wine bar with buttery croissants, champagne splits, and petit fours. French omelette, anyone? That Italian gentleman is running the espresso machine this morning, ahh well. Perhaps you English would like tea, and you Americans a cup of Joseph? We all can celebrate freedom today, even those who are not free. Vive la France. :coffee:

It's also worth pointing out that there have been suicides on the playa. There was, in fact, one at a camp in 2007. Skipping further details and not wanting to fan flames further, I'll say that unfortunate events like this aren't served well by name-calling or vilification of the victim, or by attacking those who may post or say something unkind. There are raw nerves and emotions on all sides - one of the important takeaways from something like this is the painful impact it can have on an entire community, not just the immediate friends and family. I mentioned it in a post in the Element 11 thread but it might bear repeating here (since it's been a thread in the bar today)... it underscores the importance of watching out for your friends and campmates, especially as the week wears on. Those who've been can attest that after days of not eating or sleeping right people's emotions and nerves can get frazzled. Make sure the people around you have food, have water, get rest, and are otherwise in good spirits. That said, I'll change topics.

Happy bastille day indeed!

It's been a busy day so far, not only with catching up on messages and things, but also running off to take care of stuff at our storage place, and then wrangling a few errands. Now it's time for a late lunch.

I get what you're saying fishy. It's easy to be an asshole to a stranger. If this had happened to a loved one of some of the people making rude snarky remarks, they'd probably be singing a different tune.

I'm not claiming that anyone here is being rude regarding this on Eplaya (but haven't read all remarks) but from that zuckerberg site...

Bottom line, we all gotta go sometime but when we do I hope that we can treat each other's memory with respect, love and good thoughts of what once was.

I think we should talk about it, talk about suicide, talk about mental illness. Making it a private oh "respect the people you don't know him, you don't know the circumstances," shut up, and "shut the fuck up, it's none of your business" STOPS the dialogue, stops the discussion of it as a social problem, stops the possibility of it getting some daylight so some of the other-ness, "not me, not mine" of it can wear off. If it needs to stay private, it will always be unreal to many people. What do you do when somebody says at the burn they think they might run into it and kill themselves?

and WOW, a chest trap, turn and left foot volley into the net, what beautiful muscle memory!!!

The shut the fuck up is by no means intended to stifle discussion of issues such as mental illness or suicide. I am sorry you read it as a blanket statement.

Here, nicely put: Please do engage in open discussion, but not denigrate the Utah volunteers, nor second guess what actions were taken by the safety professionals. Thank you.
