Hey there MSJ, good to see ya!

*clinks glass*

Cheers!

I hope everyone's burn prep is going well. Thinking back, I sure did have to scramble last year, mostly due to people at work actually expecting work when there was burn prep to be done. I'm determined not to get that crunched next time.

Cool and rainy here. Thankfully the fire season here has been quiet so far this year...the last couple of summers have really done a number on the whole state.

Morning, kiddies, Streets are a bit wet this morning from a light rain that has little effect drought wise. This afternoon and tomorrow a bit of playa prep and a BBQ at a friend's place on Sunday. Maybe see a couple of grandkids as well. TDIF!!!

Anti M, I recall the smoke over Reno from the Yosemite fire last year before, during and after the Burn. It was choking and depressing.

Ah well, Carpe Diem ... and YG, get off UJ's lap!

Magicmarty, The smoke was sickening BUT it made for beautiful sunrise and sunsets.

Good morning back at ya, magicmarty!

The folks at work are lovin' it. The utilities for the latest job, exploratory bores for a bridge replacement, are CLEAR. As of Wednesday. Four days ahead of schedule. I'm getting to be almost rabid about clearing utilities.

As well I should be. Somebody hit an underground utility with a horizontal directional drill in Kansas City. Turns out the gas company hadn't come out to mark the lines. Up to two blocks away, people were smelling the methyl mercaptan that the gas co. 'flavors' natural gas with so that you can know if there's a gas leak (natural gas is otherwise odorless and colorless) . They called the gas company, and finally they decided to go down to the Plaza to find out the source of the gas leak twenty minutes later. The gas company arrived, and two minutes later, JJ's restaurant blew up. A waitress died in the resulting conflagration which caused a couple million in damages. It wasn't San Bruno, but it was big enough. I ALWAYS call the one-call service before we put tool #1 into the ground. That doesn't absolve me of full responsibility. The individual utilities all have 48 hours to mark the lines and/or contact me to satisfy the needs of 'positive response'. Still, some dumbshits don't call. I have to chase them down, and file what's called a 'no call' ricket. When you finally DO get utility clearances, they're only good for as long as the marks are visible. So we HAVE to really hump it to get the work done sometimes. But after 22 years, I STILL haven't hit a utility. My men TRUST me. Every day, I work hard to be worthy of that trust. Well, just 6 more years, and I won't have to worry any more. I'll get to retire.

And to you and AntiM, stay safe. I remember the Yosemite fire from last year all too clearly. I gave Rockstar a ride to the burn from Los Angeles, and we drove up the back side of the Sierras, up 395 to Carson City and then past Silver Spring and into Fernley. Four hours behind us, they closed 395 due to the smoke. When we got to Gardnerville the cart guy in the Wal-mart parking lot was wearing a bandana over a respirator and wearing goggles. He could have gone to the playa with us if he'd had a ticket.

When Rocky and I got to BRC, the sunset was incredible. Ratty is right. What an odyssey! And you could smell the pine smoke all day.

Last night in front of the Cardroom a middle aged asian couple ran thier car up on the middle divider for no apparent reason. They knocked down a tree and smashed their little car. (If it was theirs.) They jumped out, each grabbed a handle of an ice chest and hurried on down the road. Sadly, we'll never know. Was it illegal fish or body parts?

Ratty, you're right, the sunrises and sunsets were really exquisite. The silver lining to that smoky cloud.

Owww Patsh. I think you were on your recent North American tour, when I mentioned here that I'm going to have to skip a year this year. I sure am looking forward to seeing you again, we had a fine talk last time, but dang, it will have to be 2015 for me. Sorry if I made it seem otherwise. I'll certainly miss seeing you and the rest of the gang in person.
