Post by sheiselectric » Thu Jul 17, 2014 1:49 am

has anyone other than my pal who is a burner built their shade structure out of bamboo????

he used bamboo, rebar, radiator hose clamps, shade cloth & few other items....

I'm curious, did your friend use green bamboo or dried bamboo? I can't imagine dried bamboo being flexible enough to bend into any shape to build a shade structure.

There were a lot of bamboo structures during Green Man, I think that was 2007 or something.

It works just like any other pole out there. Heck, half of China was built on bamboo scaffolding held with twine.

Seen it used for tee-pees and the likes.

Nothing wrong with bamboo as a material, it will all be about what you do with the design.

thanks for the replies....

to answer the style of structure question basically he built a carport... a rectangle if you will to go over his tent.

rebar goes into ground, slide radiator hose clamp over it, place bamboo strut/leg along side rebar & slide hose clamp up over it then screw together tightly with screw gun. Repeat...

I thought I could make over head cross pieces happen with the co-joining/crossing of hose clamps

then attach shade cloth or camp netting with bungee balls

what do you think?

all the parts & pieces seem inexpensive yet sturdy & like a great concept

Sounds reasonable for a simple square-frame.

The bottom line is you will be checking out he bamboo and have to make a judgement call on the flex/stiffness, strength etc.

You also must consider the wind loads based on the shade material you use.

If you go this route, might be a good call to bring some extra bamboo to triangulate things if the flex is too high.

Isn't bamboo a known MOOP hazard?

Shouldn't be if properly prepped by stripping off the leaves. We had giant bamboo in our yard in Japan, once stripped and cured, it was very solid.
