Licence plates were issued every year, and everyone in the province had to renew them at the same time.. and this was before the registry was privatised, and there were only two in the city of Calgary. Back then, all the licence plates were made in prison as well.

Actually, I'm only 29, and that was before my time... but I was just talking to this guy at work about that.

When I was 9 my folks bought a used 1963 T Bird that had them...if that's what you're referring to. They were removable.

Looking at the rear molding, I was gonna say a 55. I could wrong as well, but I thought in 56 the rear molding curved down.

I was incorrect in my first look. I think that I see a gas filler door on the side. My '56 had the gas filler under the left rear tail light.

So, after a second look, it does appear to be a '55.

I am not sure anymore about the 6 cylinder. On my original first owner '56, if it was a V-8 it had a large "V" under the front emblem and the 6 cylinder did not have the "V". Not sure how this configuration was on a '55.

Yep, it's a '55. People think I'm being sarcastic when I say "Well I can't afford a new car… but the truth is exactly that. I've owned that car almost 30 years!
Anyway, since you asked about the I.D. trivia - the tip-off to an original V8 was the little chrome "V" below each taillight. '57s did have the "V" under the emblem on the front though.

But you can't bet on that because most either have a V8 in them now, or have had emblems removed.
Mine had a V8 but the original was 4 or 5 engines ago. It's faster now…

The 235 was a straight-six. The design dates back to 1937 I believe, as a 216. Chevy used it until '62, then Toyota started using them in the old Land Cruisers until… hell I don't know all about them forrin cars… a while longer anyway.

Bought the car in 1964 for $25, drove it 123,000 miles before selling it, but a few years before I sold it, took it to Burning Man in 1998.
And, yeah, it had that incredibly reliable hi-torque straight six mentioned a few posts above

Well, just to answer the question, the 265 was just '55 and '56, then they came out with the 283 vernon in '57… there were ten factory displacements in all, 350 the most common.
It's pretty much the same design they used all the way until the mid-1990s.

DoctorIKnow, you did post that picture before, but it's so cool that you could post it every week if it were up to me!
That old Stovebolt is probably a better playa-transport rig than the majority of what people use, in terms of reliability and capacity, as well as just overall stoutness. If something went wrong with it, you could SEE it, and fix it with bailing wire. The sheet metal was a lot thicker - there's an "I'm so old I remember when"…. I remember when you could sit or stand on a car without it crinkling like a pop can!

Oh… sorry… shutting up now… never get me talking cars. There's a reason I'm all about the M/Vs at Burning Man…

I'm so old that I remember the Ku Klux Klan bombed the high school in my county rather than allow integration to take place (it did anyway!).

Things were not as Henry Mancini wished them to be, the 'Days of Wine and Roses'. I remember HIS orchestral skills as well......
