12v Battery and 10v Pump
Using this combination in a swamp cooler. Are there any risks? I was planning on using ice in the cooler so that would maybe help the heat from the over voltage... I just wanted someone else 2cents. Thanks!

Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
10V pump? seems pretty odd. I'm guessing it's also DC?
I'd think if both DC, it'd be ok, you can vary voltage a fair amount in DC motors.
Note auto 12V systems go as high as 14V when charging, and stuff still seems to work fine.

Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
It would probably work but how long it will last is another story. If it's one of those cheap overseas pumps, it might not last very long. Bring a backup!

I brought my unfinished bucket cooler with me to the Playa last year and Figjam helped me troubleshoot some issues I'd been having on it although it still sits unfinished in basement.

Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
The pump is a small solar pump. Yes Cheap. Yes from China. Super small 2" by 2" and runs on 4.5-10v DC. I have a small 12v 17ah battery I wanted to use.
Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
You still won't need ice as the water temp inside the cooler will be 58 degrees.
I don't know if that will save your pump.
Get a spare 12 volt pump.
They're as cheap as $9 with free shipping, but do it NOW!!!

Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
Its easy and cheap to drop the voltage from 12 volts.
Silicon diodes have a 0.7 volt drop across the junction. Most 12 v batteries actually put out about 12.6 volts. So put three diodes in series (3 x 0.7v = 2.1 volts) with the power lead for a 2.1 volt drop. Easy peasy. For extra bonus points, throw some shrink tubing around the final assembly for water resistance (or you can meatball it with a short length of soda straw pumped full of caulk. Either works fine at these voltages).
These diodes are available for cheap at RadioSchlok. When I get on a real computer I will give you a part number, but as long as the diodes are rated for the max current, just about any diode would work.

Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
Look Fig. I have already ran around the internet 10 times looking at pumps and I have already bought two of them. Im not gonna spend MORE money and MORE time on. If you can link me this $9 pump shipped awesome. If not then don't send me a link of a google search.... I have already went threw every link already.twice.FIGJAM wrote:No!

EDIT:all these cost more then what I spent on my first two pumps. And buying more pumps is out of the question. I need to make what I have work. You know your saying "dont buy your burn, build it." Which is exactly what im trying to do by not buying more stuff.

Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
How do I connect them? Will electrical tape work? with some electrical tape around the whole thing for insulation instead of all the heatshrink wrap or straws and silicone?GreyCoyote wrote:Its easy and cheap to drop the voltage from 12 volts.

Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
Hey GreyCoyote Do i only need to put those diodes running on the positive side or both pos and neg side?

Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
Connect them end to end in a line. If you look carefully at the part, it will have a white bar on one end. They need to be soldered together "nose to tail" with all those white bars pointing the same way.
Install it inline with the positive lead. The end of the last diode should have that white bar closest to the pump. If you install it backwards, nothing happens. The diodes block the flow of current completely. Just turn the assembly around and you will be good to go.
As to using tape as insulation, if its all you have it is better than nothing, but dont expect this to last long. A fat drinking straw over the assembly and pumped full of hot glue, or epoxy, or even caulk would be better. The proper way would be to use heatshrink tubing with hotmelt glue on the inside. This is rated for underwater use under 60 volts and would result in a perfect seal.
In the end its important to understand this is a workaround to get ya going with what you have as cheaply as possible. In a perfect world you would get a different pump, but sometimes this isnt always possible.

Because your smarter and faster, better, and stronger. Thanks you very much for the link. even though its a little late for me to order thoughs.FIGJAM wrote:If you have gone through all of it twice, how did you miss this!![]()

EDIT: This is basically the same pump I have... Same size and even specs as far as LPH and Lift Height... It just accepts 5.5-12v and mine takes 4.5-10v.
Damn I wish I would have found these. I can't tell you how many days on end for over 4 hours a day I went one page...to page... to page... to page... to page....
Re: 12v Battery and 10v Pump
I deny being any of those things, and refuse to compete!!!
I don't think 2 volts extra will hurt it, but test it at home.

Cool Ill try it out when I get all the parts and put it together. Ill also post the pictures in specs for other to learn from my mistakes.
