Where to buy panels for Hexayurt in CA

Post by schickimiki » Tue Jul 22, 2014 3:34 pm

Hi, we will fly from Europe to SFO and will then drive up north towards Chico where we will hopefully manage to build hexayurts in a day :-). Where can we pick up suitable panels for building Hexayurts on the way (10' H15 type)? I am also not sure which ones we should use. Any help appreciated, thanks! If you have some used yurts to sell that might also help ;-).

Any big box hardware store should have the necessary contractor supply parts. Though I'm sure if you spent a few minutes either searching or browsing the threads here you'd find plenty of info, this thread has all the info you'll ever need.

How many people do you have? The ratio needs to be about 2-4 people per H12 hexayurt in order to realistically get them all made in one day.

The big box stores in the area are usually cleaned out around this time of the year. When I built mine, I had to scour four different stores on both sides of the SF Bay to find enough panels.

Also keep in mind that the 6" wide bidirectional filament tape is not something that you will be able to find in any store. Usually you will need to special order it. While you could use what ever tape you can get at a hardware store, you are setting yourself up for possible structural failure of the seams.

There should be a Home Depot in Chico. Right out in the east where all the malls are. Maybe you should contact them now, and make sure they will have what you need.

Do you already have the tape? If not it will be a problem. You need special bidirectional filament tape. Regular stuff won't cut it when the winds pick up.

Probably easier to do a tent and monkey hut if you're just now getting started...

Yup. My neighbors last year were three Italian guys who brought a tent and monkeyhut. They asked for some help figuring out how the monkeyhut should work, but were set up in a few hours and seemed completely comfortable with the setup. They had someone who lived in the USA willing to take their monkeyhut and tent on the way back to the airport.

Thanks for all the replies so far!! I will order tape here, so that should be ok. I am more worried about the panels.

What is the exact name of panels to use? Are these the right ones? I might call the store manager and make sure they have enough on stock when we arrive.

Those are the right panels. You might want to pre-order and pay for them so you are sure they are there when you go to get them.

If you find that you can't be certain they have the tape and they will have a place to ship it to you in the States, you might consider finding tape at home in Europe and bringing it in your luggage. IMO it would be much better to be certain that you have it.

You don't say why you're going to Chico first, but if you have friends near Chico you might consider asking the friends to buy your panels now and save them for you, again so that you're certain you have them.
