Drill tip for conduit fittings

Post by Pootzen » Fri Jul 18, 2014 10:39 am

I'm going to try building an EMT shade canopy this year using 1" fittings.

Someone else on eplaya had suggested replacing all the eye screws on these fittings with hex bolts in order to screw them in faster.

But, I found this tip on a woodworking site.

I'll try it out during my test build next weekend and report back.

After seeing this tip I've hard a hard time taking anything Chuck Miller says seriously.

That stuff works great! Saved me lots of times.

But take my word for it; it's not for use on your body. :(

Most people just use the old fashioned approach (NSFW)

:D That was the first time I saw Chuck Miller so every time I watch him now I keep hearing in my head "lay it on thick". And yes, I did see the date on the video. The hook in the drill is a good idea and I will use if I have to install/remove a bunch of eye hooks.

We use a sizable 1" EMT shade structure (2,300 square feet last year, 2,600 square feet this year). You don't need to attach them "faster" nor would a power tool even help with that. If you have the screws set properly (not quite sticking in) you only need about one turn to go from nothing to tight. The threads are pretty coarse. It's not like you're screwing into the EMT, just creating pressure against it.

Good tip, I was not aware of this. Thanks again FossaFerox! :)

Next time you see the person who suggested you use a power tool, give 'em a good slap!

What FossaFerox said, they hand tighten and don't need to be any tighter and require no tools whatsoever. Even if you replaced the eye bolts with screws or hex bolts, you'd run the risk of over-tightening or even stripping the thread in the fitting.
