Where to Camp when you are not part of a Camp?

Post by Dwettingfeld » Wed Jul 23, 2014 4:43 pm

So I realize once there I will need to check with those around me if a spot I may be considering is open or not. But how do I narrow down the Playa before I get there.... What area's may be a good fit for me?
We will not be part of a camp. We are middle aged. We will have a travel trailer. Most likely we will be more day time burners.. (I do plan to enjoy the Playa in the evening, but I am sure I will not be partying all night long. :) ) I would like to be out on the outer rings... I looked at the Burner Map... But it doesn't show you where camps are on the map (unless they are camps you know.) I would like to plot myself on the map in the general area I may be camped at (for friends). Should I consider west of 6:00 or east of 6:00, should I be closer to 5:00 or 8:00? Please help....

The white areas of the map are free for the taking. The shaded areas are reserved. You will get handed a map at the gate. Get an idea of where you want to camp before you come then double check the map you get. I camped towards the outer ring. It is farther out but also less populated and I could sit on my 'porch' and hear the virgins ringing the bell at the gates at all hours. It was enjoyable.

There's no designated section of the city for middle aged, or traveling with trailer, or mostly daytime. Check out the city map, and the space that's earmarked as unreserved is just that... unreserved when the gates open. There may be some small camps set up in unreserved space between G and the outer-most street, those would mostly be staff/volunteers who come early as part of their work and are not part of a placed camp (the camps that are in the reserved space).

Closer in towards Esplanade you tend to find busier and more active camps, it's like being closer to downtown. As you move outwards, thing are a bit more quiet. Still plenty of people and lots to see and do, but they're generally quieter neighborhoods.

Over the last couple years, the city has become more densely populated on the 9:00 side of the dial, which means people are a bit more crowded in, the porta-potties are more heavily used, and emergency services are more strained. My recommendation would be to aim for the 3:00 side of the dial - less cramped is nice, better porta-potty conditions are also nice. Additionally, if you're not entirely sure about wanting to set up on one of the streets proper, there's a great big chunk of land beyond the outermost street on the 3:00 side that's designated as open camping.

Look around once you are there. Camp in any available space that suits your vibe.

Then post your location in the directory at Playa Info located at center camp. Tell your friends to go there to look up your location.

I did not come here for Snark... I have been doing my research for 8 months now. I am just looking for input from those with experience. How can someone give my advice if they know nothing about me...

C'mon, Trilo's comment barely registers as snark around here.

Did I say I was looking for a middle aged, day time burnner camp? No...

I don't see any snark so far so not sure what that comment was aimed at, but our first year we were in open camping at about 5:45 and H. Quiet, but not too quiet, great neighbors, a block from G which is sort of a scaled down esplanade these days, generally a place I would consider if I was camping solo again.

The 9:00 side of the city tends to be a lot more active at night so it might not be as good a match.

Edit: In all seriousness, if you thought Trilo's comment was snarky, perhaps you should reconsider if this is really for you. I'm not trying to be obnoxious here, just that calling out a seriously helpful post from a moderator as snark seems a bit thin skinned to me.

Keep doing your research. Beside the suggestions so far, check out the Theme Camp threads here on Eplaya for this year. The neighborhood threads have camps announcing their placement, and someone nice burner put together a Google map where people have been dropping their camps.

So if there is something in particular you like (or want to avoid) you can look it up.

Wow, mellow out... that wasn't sarcasm. It was just using the terms you used, pointing out that there's no particular area best for anything. Other than 10:00 and 2:00 being loud and reserved areas for placed there camps, it's pretty much free-for-all.
But with your attitude, few will want to be helpful!

I think you're imagining snark where there is none. But even if there was, it would all come with the territory (please see this post for more info) All I know about you is what you shared in your initial post. You asked people to suggest where you should camp, and then gave us that info ("We will not be part of a camp. We are middle aged. We will have a travel trailer. Most likely we will be more day time burners."). Honest, there isn't a better (or worse) part of town for any of those things. It's a big city, and there's generally plenty of space (though based on how things have played out in recent years, there's been more of it on the 3:00 side as the week wears on). The info I wrote is solid, I hope it helps you figure out a spot.

Holy shit, are you middle-aged only in body? If you're this thin-skinned over this mislabeled "snark," please reconsider attending this event.

Your mileage may vary, and everyone thinks differently, but I've always found the 3:00-6:00 side a bit quieter with less daytime sound and more quiet in the night. I know that in the past (over ten years ago, maybe twenty?) half the town used to be designated as quiet and half as loud, and the quiet side was 3:00-6:00. It might still be somewhat true... but really, every block is very different. Drive around, feel it out, and you'll find a great spot to go!

I think a lot of your decision should be how you value excitement vs quiet. Not that much of the city is quiet, but outer is much quieter than inner and keep in mind that loud "sound camps" are required to be close to 10 and 2 so the far edges of the city can be very loud. Although you could try to look up a theme camp now that has similarly minded people to you, it would be difficult to camp near them because theme camps are often "placed" and there isn't always empty space next to them.

You might try the "public plazas" at certain streets on 9 and 3. These areas are by design unreserved and intended for small communities to pop up. You might be more comfortable being surrounded by a multitude of very small camps rather than a very large camp.

Enjoy the Burn!

The outer rings are a good choice given the parameters you have stated. Mostly daytime habits and a travel trailer would work well there. If you have a generator, you should consider staying away from Hushville and walk-in camping, but anywhere else is game.

As a suggestion: The noon radial, up to and including 1 o'clock, somewhere on the J/K/L rings would be your best bet. The informal term in the community is "apexing". The only downside is the distance to the portos, but a good pee jug should make this doable. Lots of space out there that isnt marked by blue flags, and wouldnt be considered by most Burners.

Do you plan to use a generator with that travel trailer? Because if not Hushville may actually be a great fit for you. Registration is currently open. Hushville is a village that does not have dues, but does require pre-registration to camp with them. The rules are no generators and no amplified sound. Now, don't expect it to be quiet, it's not, but it is slightly more quiet than the rest of the city. Big art cars still drive by blasting tunes, and Hushvillains are a friendly bunch so there is plenty of chatter and laughter :) The population tends to skew a bit older, I'm 30 and I'm the youngest in my camp (we are in Hushville!) by about a decade, our ages range from me to an amazing 82 year old burner :)

Anyway, just a possible option for you, enjoy your burn!!! :D :D Oh!! And Hushville is just a bit in from 5 and E this year :)

FWIW, the Facebook site is kindler and gentler. Please be sure to try over there before deciding Burning Man isn't for you...

I'm locking this thread up, as the user has left the site and would not be able to respond to replies. While he/she may not have appreciated the responses, I'd like to thank all those who replied. I thought there was a lot of great and helpful info, and hopefully it may come in handy for someone else who's undecided on where to go.
