Where do I find used bicycles in Reno?

Post by Alexztheman » Mon Jul 21, 2014 4:25 pm

Hi all,

I'm trying to find somewhere to buy a used bike in Reno.

Craigslist is one option I know, but I think it would be better to go to a store that sell used bikes and also buy some extra packagestuff and bike around Reno for a couple of days as well, get the picture? :P

I am coming in from Sweden so I thought I'd buy a bike and spend some time fixing it up on some parking-lot before going on the bus to BM :)

I also read something about gifting the bike after the event, or did I misread something?
I just want to be, that's all ;-)

Used bikes are going to be very thin on the ground in Reno next month. There are various organizations, for profit and non-profits, that will provide you with a bike, but they take reservations and may well be sold out by now. If you buy the specific model of bike that the yellow/green bike program in Black Rock City uses, you can then donate that at the end of the event.

Sorry, that's the best I got.

My yearly report on bicycles in Reno.

For our O/S friend. There are no stores in Reno that sell used bikes. Not for a living anyway.

We will cut to the chase this year. The only place you will find a reasonably priced bike this year is the El Rancho Drive In Swap Meet(ask Crypto for address). My amigos there have loaded up on bikes this year like there is no tomorrow. There must have been 50 this past Sunday.Prices all over but quality bikes available for $40-50.Open Saturday and Sunday.

Reno Bike Project on 4th St. only other hope, and worthy of everyones support, but expect to pay more than you would at the flea.Forget about the thrift stores.
Be careful. You can spend all your money in there..............................Oriental Visitor

Buying a used bike off Craigslist can be very hit or miss. There have been a number of times that I attempted to buy something off Craigslist, had what seemed like an endless exchange of email and then had the deal just fall through for no reason. If you aren't going to have multiple days to get this done I wouldn't recommend Craigslist.

There is what might be a much better way. But I am conflicted because I believe that I am not supposed to post anything in these forums that advertises a retail store. So, with that in mind:

There is a very large retailer that operates in the USA. This retailer sells bicycles, and they have both a website and a store in Reno. You can purchase a bike off the website and have it shipped to the store, where it will be waiting for you to pick up. This store is also a convenient place to pick up many of the things you will need.

The bike you want to buy is a Huffy Cranbrook 26 inch. This is the bike that Burning Man uses in their "Yellow Bike" community bike program. They are the ONLY bike that Burning Man will accept as a donation if you wish to discard it after the event. They are also a fairly inexpensive bike, $99 from the website. Look at this web page for details:

fyi--if it's not your business and in response to a question, you can recommend businesses.
Even I don't wish for greater purity on this issue.

Allright, now I have some clearity about the bike, think I will buy a new one and then gift it after the event, then I know it's hopefully ok;)

WHat do you think about those onespeed with 4" tires, are they good for the playa or are they "too" wide and hard to ride? I read that they could be hard to ride against the wind but other than that I gueass they would be fine, what do you think?

If you want to gift the bike to Burning Man, they will ONLY accept the Huffy Cranbrook.

I rode one of the fat tire bikes last year at Burning Man and it seemed good. But I only rode it a very short distance so it wasn't much of a test.

My regular bike was a 21 speed mountain bike. I don't think I ever shifted out of whatever gear it was in. A single speed beach cruiser will do just fine.
