What are you gonna eat this year?
Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
I don't use my ice chest for food. It's strictly for beer and wine and canned fruit. Plus anything that I open and don't finish immediately. I usually have a pickle and walk out to the road and 'gift' the rest.
14 cans fruit
1 jar jalapeno slices
1 fig newtons
1 jar dill pickles 1 apple newtons
1 jar red peppers 1 vanilla waffers
2 can raviolli
1 tub powered fruit punch
1 small tobasco 1 dried mixed fruits
10 cans soup (no cream soups) 1 dried banannas
2 cans clam chowder 2 dried cranberries
1 pkgs dry spaghetti 9 dried pineapple
4 large gatorades 2 dried pineapple & papaya
2 bags potatoe chips 2 jar of peanuts
10 cup o noodles 9 honey bunches of oats Granola raspberry
6 sardines 4 bag of mixed nuts
2 pkgs saltines 6 pepperoni pkgs
6 instant oatmeal 9 bags hard candy
1 pkg powdered milk 1 variety pack crackers, (costco)
40 coffee sticks
6 tea bags 3 can Cheeze Whiz
5 gallon jugs water
1 can chili no beans 1 5 gallon water container
4 bottles liquor (from 86 at work)
1 case of cheap beer 1 small bottle tequila
1 Hazelnut coffee creamer powder
1 sugar container
Individual liquid creamers for oatmeal
Salt & Pepper
New for 2014
1 Large jar pepperoncinis and cheese whiz on crackers for M&G
1 box of cold cereal
30 filled honey bears (nuts and dried fruits)
1 Skippy chocolate PB
4 Small bags of fritos for my canned chili
I may grab some frozen food from home at the last second when my husband isn't looking. A tupperware of frozen spaghetti sauce tastes great my second night there.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
I'm glad I didn't sign up for food at the M&G. I tried squirting cheez whiz into a pepperoncini tonight and it gaged me. It was horrific. I chilled the can of 'cheese' and it didn't help a bit. After the face I made my husbank wouldn't go near it. I have other great uses for Easy Cheezy but this was a bust. Maybe I should try that skippy chocolate Peanut butter before I drag it out to the playa. Last year I was all excited about the vanilla wafers and can of chocolate frosting. That turned out to be pretty disgusting. Can't go wrong with canned goods.

Wow, you guys make me feel like a slacker.
My entire shopping list for 12 days:
10 cans of beefaroni.
A few large jars of dill pickles.
A bag of beef jerky.
8 gallons of water
12 cases of PBR
5 or 6 quarts of booze.
If I am in the mood I may also pick up a pack of fruit cups.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
In keeping with my plan of not having to do any From-Scratch cooking on the playa by precooking, freezing, and vacuum packing all my food; I experimented with something today that I have never tried before.
I made a batch of blueberry pancakes, poured on melted home-made butter, placed a piece of wax paper between each pancake, froze them rock hard, and then vacuum packed them. Later in the week, I will let the bag thaw in the refrigerator and warm the pancakes in hot water
If my past experiences with this method are any indication success, the blueberry pancakes should be great - especially with sorghum molasses or honey from the bee hives on the property.
If this method works (and I see no reason that it will not) I intend to make several batches just in case some "thieving villains" steal my breakfast off of my plate when my back is turned.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
Breakfast will be coffee and cream, maybe a orange or banana. Not sure exactly what days I will want to cook eggs, but I will make mushroom omelets at least twice. Other days will be cold cereal or instant oatmeal. Mimosas on Saturday morning!
Lunch is either and PB&J or snacks like tortilla chips and guac, or a hard boiled egg and fruit.
Dinner for three nights is provided by camp. Other nights will be veggie stir fry with tofu, bean tacos, soup and crackers (or grilled cheese depending on my mood), quinoa and french lentils with slices of fresh avo.
My sweetie brings at least two boxes of cereal and milk for snacks. I bring hummus and pita chips, baby carrots, and a package of Toby's for sharing snacks. String cheese is a staple. I am going to try to cut up a ton of watermelon to eat in the first day or two (avoiding rinds on playa). Lara bars and raw almonds or cashews are in the day pack for wondering.
Beer, Kerns, and sparkling water are always in the drink cooler.
We make ice cream every afternoon.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
I always make a few homemade comfort meals, then seal and freeze them in individual portions with enough to share:
chicken pot pie is a tried and true favorite out there, and is even fantastic for breakfast!!
lasagna 1 - tomato sauce, ground beef, artichoke hearts
lasagna 2 - creamy roasted garlic parmesan sauce with roasted veggies, spinach in the ricotta
I love having a curry dish from my favorite Thai place at home, split in two with rice and then vacuum sealed!
PICKLES! Chips and salsa, salt & vinegar chips, fruit cups, grapes, hummus and pita chips.
Tortillas, Trader Joe's cuban black beans and pepper jack cheese for quesadillas.
For breakfast one day, the Bisquick pancake jug where you add water, shake, and pour. Pancakes are amazing for breakfast with real maple syrup!
Horizon shelf-stable chocolate milk cartons, San Pellegrino Oranciata, Ultima grape electrolyte powder mix.
Ensure shakes, in case I'm not feeling well and need nutrients.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
EAS recovery protein (one shake in the morning, one at night)
Coconut water (2L per day, mixed with the powder)
One can of monster "M-80" each morning.
Bacon
A shit ton of vitamins.
Works shockingly well. The recovery protein is actually mostly good carbs with a lot of branched chain amino acids. Makes bouncing back after a day of putting my body through the ringer super easy. I think I faired better than anyone in my group (same age, fitness, all eating elaborate home cooked meals, all sleeping more than me and exploring less).
Not sustainable for long term use (malnutrition would be a problem after doing this for 2-3 months), but to squeeze out performance/recovery for a week? Heaven.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
I make a cheap version of cervaca , instead of shrimp I use a 1/2 can of tuna, and 1 can of campbells tomato bisque soup, mild salsa about 1/2 can =(the empty tomato soup can ), tsp lime juice , just mix it with 1/2 can of water. Above gives me about 2 bowls of soup . Heat and serve

Cans of Progresso lentile soup
Canned peaches (in peach juice)
Beer (one/day)
Wine (16 ounces/day)
Corn Chips
Nuts
Nothing refrigerated. Wine/beer stays cool under blankets during day and you can cool beer in evaporating water
I'm trying to lose weight too.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
Arriving 08.23.14 leaving 09.01.14 at some point
7 cans of various Progresso and Chunky soups that I like (lentil/andoullie sausage, jambalaya, chicken/sausage gumbo, black bean...)
A box of pop tarts
2 boxes shelf stable bacon
1 Jar pickled veggies and garlic
1 hormel spinach ravioli (shelf stable)
1 hormel "pork sandwich filling" (shelf stable)
2 single serve of spam
1 can potted meat product
10 clif bars
2 avacados
whatever they feed me on my gate shifts.
I might have too much, I might have just enough. I also like to share.
As with others...my cooler is for beer.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
I started throwing the food pod together. Mostly easy to prepare, or no prep required stuff...trail mix, chips, cookies...
Some squeeze pouch fruit things for the cooler, and of course bacon.
I haven't seen anyone mention summer sausage. It keeps well and makes good sandwiches or just finger food - I've got some frozen and ready to go.
I ordered Chinese take-out tonight, and will freeze a couple of meals worth to "boil in a bag"...made some mac-n-cheese to do the same with.
So I've read a lot here about coconut water...how great it is and all, so I bought a small carton of it to try. Chilled it, took a big swig...
could not get the bag of chocolate donuts open fast enough to get rid of that taste!! Ewww... Maybe I got a bad brand or something but I think I will stick to regular water and some gatoraid type drinks..!

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
I bagged some servings of dry cereal with powdered milk. Add some cold water, and it's good for breakfast. Powdered milk might be an acquired taste, but it's convenient for camping. I am still in the denial phase of how much I have left to do. It's o.k. I am trying to be more realistic and count how many days, how many meals, and then what might be snacks. I am remembering how many days I was eating out of baggies of pre-portioned things when I've gotten home in years past. A can of chicken noodle soup is still one of my favorite playa meals, add a few sun dried tomatoes or crinkled dry seaweed. I have a few pre-dusted cans out in the garage ready to go, I'm certain. My sister's big freezer died, so I've got to manage with my little top door freezer this year. Mainly I freeze containers of water, to keep things cold, and to be my ice water. I like dilute Tang, and Lemonade, ice tea from powder mix as beverages.

That's funny right there.... I have to say the store bought stuff is different than fresh from the tap. One of my fondest drink memories is having a guy knock off the top of a coconut, add lime juice and rum, and hand it over as a fresca pina colada... so good!
But you are right, the commercial stuff tastes yucky.

Not Coconut Water...
I don't like it either, although in my case it's not a "blech" thing, more of a if-I-put-it-down-here-and-forget-to-pick-it-up-I'm-okay-with-that thing. And it's more texture than taste... weird and unsettling, rather than gross. The pineapple stuff gives it flavor, but doesn't solve the texture problem.

The only coconut water I can stomach is Zirco. No pulp, no weird texture, mild taste. Goes down like a dream on the playa.

Re: What are you gonna eat this year?
Started curing 28 lbs of pork belly on Monday, will be smoking Wednesday most likely. This is my personal stash, the camp kitchen will be stocked with another 30 lbs or so different kinds of store and deli bacon.
Ordering veggies on Sunday from the organic farm I work at for the cooking party... We will be feeding approx 20 campers every night with pre-assembled meals in disposable baking dishes, stored in a chest freezer and cooked in the oven: Green chile enchiladas, lasagna, shepherds pie, BBQ chicken, mac&cheese, to name few...
In the vacuum sealer: Pulled pork, bacon braised collard greens, coconut curry with rice.
Tomorrow I'm making the pickles. Mostly sweets and sweet-hots with a few jars of dills.
A couple big heads of cabbage (savoy is my fave) are great for playa salads and sandwich embellishing. They just hang out in the cooler on top of everything else, pretty hardy brassicas, they don't even need to be in a bag.
One of my favorite playa snacks is sausage balls. Equal parts breakfast sausage, grated cheese and bisquick mashed up, rolled into balls and baked just until the meat is cooked. They live in a ziplock bag in the cooler, I usually eat one or two whenever I grab a beer.
This year I'm also bringing the deep fryer...

So... when and where are you planning on eating your breakfast?Meat Hunter wrote: I made a batch of blueberry pancakes, poured on melted home-made butter...
...the blueberry pancakes should be great - especially with sorghum molasses or honey from the bee hives on the property.
If this method works (and I see no reason that it will not) I intend to make several batches just in case some "thieving villains" steal my breakfast off of my plate when my back is turned.
