Is there a prevailing wind direction at BRC???

Is there a direction from which the prevailing wind comes from in this desert location.

This information would be helpful in arranging the position of the vehicle and the awning tent structure attached to the vehicle.

I appreciate your advice on this subject.

Prevailing winds come out of the WSW, but it's extremely unreliable. That's ONLY for the gentle prevailing winds. When it gets bad it comes from all directions, sometimes all at once.

What FF said, IMO you are far better off orienting to maximize shade through the day as the sun moves across the sky.

In my observation, severe winds funnel through the length of the valley between the mountains that are on the east and west sides of the playa, most often coming generally from the south (from Gerlach) but severe winds can on occasion also come in from the north. A look at the playa from Google Earth is helpful to understanding this configuration. Gentler winds can come from any direction, especially after the city is built and the surrounding structures can impact the direction of gentle prevailing winds in your immediate vicinity.

Caveat: my experience is limited to the 2 weeks I spent on the Playa in 2013. YMMV

I like to have a vehicle to the south of my tent to block the strongest winds. Indeed, they seem to follow the shape of the channel shaped by the mountains, as Roundabout notices, and come from Center Camp aimed slightly more towards 9 or 10 o' clock. But yeah, the whole city can catch the storm at once, and the wind can come from everywhere.

Yes, as said here, vehicle orientation should be for the sun, not so much for the wind. We know where the sun is, always. Not so for the wind.

I'd be more worried about the black hole than the volcano. Both will kill you but the volcano wont suck you in.

So if I get in the black hole it will shoot me out the volcano? Maybe I should camp by it, easy transport back to camp.

The Black Hole is actually at 5:45 and E this year if memory serves

Generally, as a rule, if you drop anything, hat falls off, or something blows away, the wind is blowing in the opposite direction of anyone being able to grab it.
Likewise, if you camp with someone who rolls their own smokes, have them sit down and start twisting, the wind will come from whatever direction they are facing.
I usually have my truck on the south side, with ropes attached to the tent and shade shelter, using the vehicle as an anchor more than a windblock.
And I suppose the direction of the prevailing wind in a common dust devil is up.
