Oh, and fuck. Here's to all of us who did, and all the kids who will survive childhood and adolescence intact.
That's pretty much what I did. I was a very good kid, great grades, nice girl so forth ... got to Utah and the system refused to work with my cobbled together grades from the 14 schools I'd attended as a military brat. I was stuck in remedial courses because they didn't know if I could do the work, or that was the only class open. I skipped out in my junior year (sorry mom), took the GED and went to Weber State when my peerrs were still seniors at Ogden High. Sure, I screwed up college too, but certainly not from academics; blame the junkie boyfriend for the 0.0 GPA and joining the Navy. It all worked out eventually, I now have two BS degrees; I'd be a college student forever if I could get someone to pay for it.Just a suggestion, but usually if a kid goes to a community college- they get a multiplier on any credits earned there- and it goes toward high school. And rather than 'forcing' a kid to be there- colleges can care less. I paid more attention at college than at high school as they didn't try to treat me like a kid. Childish antics are ignored, if you're not there- the college gets your money anyway. He would have to get a GED (or equivilant where you're at), but that would prompt him to try. There must be something at the local com college that he's interested in.

ditto.
i skipped out jr. year, too - straight to comm. college and 3.7 gpa after pretty much dropping to Ds in HS cuz i was so fucking bored with busy work and was miserable among my 'peers'.
took me a while to work my way through undergrad and figure out what i wanted to do - strike that - to convince my family that what i wanted to do (theatre) was viable. I now have a master's degree and the job of my dreams. just wish it paid better.
and i wouldn't trade the real world/hard knocks learning i got from doing it "the hard way" for anything.

20 years of night school. Got a BS in IT and a 2 year electronics tech. Still going, probably always will. But now I don't have to work 2 jobs to afford it.
As to regrets for doing it the hard way, only one. I had an extremely stunted social life from 17 to about 27. No time for it between job/school. Either it was work, school, homework, eating, or sleeping- 24/7. That was it. Few friends, rarely got out, almost never had girlfriends. Oh and meth creeped into the picture during that time, but I left that behind a long time ago.
Left me being somewhat socially awkward, but I've always been kind of a weirdo anyway. I just learned to love being weird later in life (big thanks to the Burning Man and the Cacophony Society on this one).

if i were to hazard a guess it would be that many of us find ourselves a little bit 'socially awkward'. count me in on that.
sometimes the way you pay for the traditional route is not finishing. hell, i had done 3 years of post high school college (.5 year worth from taking college courses in high school for a total of degree minus a semester, more or less) and then i just fuckin burned out. i've had intentions to go back for years, but now that the burnout factor has finally died down i just can't see having the cash.
besides that, i have yet to find a school that won't drive me crazy after a year and a half or so. those damn admin departments... grrr....
ah, btw, that's what 'Running Start' is in this neck of the woods. the whole, go to college and finish your HS diploma at the same time. i have some BRILLIANT friends who did that almost all through HS. one is delaying her graduation from evergreen because had she graduated this last year she couldn't legally drink at the party.
another idea is that here they have NEVAC - voctech courses taught at area schools. they're intensive courses, for several hours a day. people commute to different towns for their interest. we had Tech Theatre Performance and Production at ours, among others. Are there similar programs at yours? (where else do you get to play with paint and power tools on a regular basis and get credit for it?)
Besides that, i heard that the Alternative HS kids have all the fun.

As far as I can tell that's the problem with young men. Testosterone poisening. I don't like to fall into the cliches with that, but it does seem to persistantly crop up, cross time and culture.Silver 2 wrote:adrenaline junkie

I fall into this category. Top 10 percent of graduating class, straight As, prez of student council, yadayada, but upon graduating (actually starting the downward spiral my senior year) went nuts, including law trouble, major depression, floundering through university for years before bailing completely, marrying an abusive man on extremely short notice, leaving me a single mom of three, no college degree, who hangs out on a computer all day and all night..... Wait, is this the confessions thread? Fuck.Rian Jackson wrote:Joel:
Just think of it this way.. much as it blows now (and really, it sounds like you are doing a stellar job) they could have NOT been underschievers in HS and then turned out fucked up later.
My sister and i were both pretty on top of grades and responsibilities and all of those things that were bred into us. Now she's become anti-social and i'm, well... how can we say this? my poor parents fear for both my life and my soul. and that's without knowing the half of it.
....
oh, and fuuuuck.

Fucking always hang in there, just never know what will wander your way; hey, my first degree took me TWENTY fucking years to complete, only took chipping away at six or seven universities a course or two at a time!! I just had to finish it.
And then I found Burning Man ....
fuck! woohoo! I'm a highly educated homemaker! Not what I ever fucking imagined, but what works right now.

my educational journey...
graduated HS in '75... average grades... to include flunking freshman typing as a senior... entirely too many young and lovely ladies...
attended a junior college only to flunk out/lost interest after two years.
joined the military, and returned to school, baked.
did Officer Candidate School and MP Officer Basic Course
got my AA in somewhere around '84 or so...
did Infantry Officer Advance Course
went back to school in '89
got by Board of Governor's BA in '93 or so...
began master's progam and lost interest...
was awarded an additional 4 years of free tuition due to veteran's status...
returned to school for teacher's certificate, picked up an art course, and lost interest in teaching...
i will return to school when there is something that interests me, like ceramics....

Fuck. Know what happens when a deer steps in front of a FreightLiner doing 65 mph?
Bambi Surprise. Bambi Ker-blobs. Chunky Creamed O'Bambi.
I'm just glad Larry is fucking Okay, and that the little car behind was only disabled by deer pieces rather than the whole deer, would've likely killed the folks. Larry's rig only lost a headlight, signals and a bit of fender; the little Civic lost a radiator and most of their front end.
Oh, and fuck, the TRUCK was doing 65, not the deer.
