My friend and I (both from Chicago) are going to be heading to Burning Man for the first time this year. We've both wanted to go for awhile and things finally worked out.
We're planning on camping, so I've been reading a ton about what to bring so I'm not wandering around helpless on the playa... and I've found we definitely underestimated the logistics involved in radical self-reliance. Now I'm a bit nervous, but at least I found out with a bit of time left to prepare.

Welcome to ePlaya! Now... run, don't walk (as the saying goes), to the Survival Guide and all the other First-Timer Information on the web site. Read all that information, twice.
You do have tickets and vehicle pass, right?

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Re: First time burner
Hey, welcome. I also started prep fairly recently for my first burn. It can be overwhelming at first. It is something of a project to get ready and be ready.
I've been focusing on and checking off the important stuff ticket, personal and stuff transport, shade, bike, supporting gear. Info on all of this is detailed extensively in the survival guide and first-timer info docs.
These forums are a great resource, just search and ask for help!

Re: First time burner
Thanks for welcome- we do have tickets, a vehicle pass and I've read the canonical guides.
Right now I'm working on compiling a list of what I'll want to bring and trying to figure out if it's feasible to make a monkey hut.

Re: First time burner
welcome.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Welcome! You have adequate time if you focus and do more per day than you think you need to, from now until your departure day.
Forget February . . . somehow August is always the shortest month of the year.
My favorite trick for searching ePlaya is actually by tossing eplaya into keyword searches of google. There's a search function here, but I somehow work faster in google. If you get really stuck on a subject, ask. The more research people can tell you've done, the nicer they (might) be.
