Bicycle help!

Post by lostnfoundaround » Wed Jul 30, 2014 4:00 am

Hello everyone!

This will be my first Burning Man and I plan on traveling by motorcycle (If you all have any advice about this that would be greatly appreciated as well!).

The issue is that it will be challenging enough bring just basic supplies with me that I realistically can't bring a bike. Should I really try to somehow get one (Any tips) OR is it not necessary?

Are the yellow bikes sufficient?

Thanks so much!!!

I'm sure others will chime in. You can not get your supplies on a motorcycle. You will need to get someone to haul them in for you. (just your water for each day wouldn't fit on your bike, shelter, food, etc?) I went to the burn without a bike but wish I had one, but I still saw plenty walking. I never saw a yellow bike until the last day so you can't depend on those either.

There is a thread somewhere with a motorcycle discussion, try a search for it.

it was right near the top, unfortunately it doesn't solve your bicycle quandry, it does however prove that BM is possible to do self sufficiently on a motorbike.

Check it out:

The 2X2 Cycles Motorcycle Bicycle Rack

Just like roof racks for cars though, they don't come cheap.

Beyond that, I'd suggest a motorcycle trailer. I think the aluminum ones on this site are kind of cool. Again though, not cheap.

Or as suggested above, find someone with a car or truck to haul your gear for you.

Also, have you seen this thread?

Jerks lock up yellowbikes left and right, definitely not dependable. Having a bike makes a big difference as far as allowing you to get out and maximize what you can see and do, but it's not 100% necessary... more like 88.4%.

If you CHOOSE to go to BM on a motorcycle, you're choosing a pretty harsh time out there.
I won't say it can't be done, I've seen it done. But not comfirtably.
If I were going to do this (and there's no way in hell I'd make that choice) I'd look at a 20" BMX bike, and disassemble it to carry it. The frames are pretty damn small, without the wheels and forks and cranks on them. Then tie the pieces on wherever you can.

Yup. The only yellow bikes I see out there are in motion.

Heads-up for SF folks needing to transport a bike. (particularly burner express people)

There is a bike decorating event tonight:

If you pre-pay using playa bike repair Bike Transport, you can leave your bike tonight. This means you have one less large thing to deal with the morning of your departure on BE.

Regarding bike lock, they prefer a combo lock, which will allow you to immediately leave with your bike once you find it in the racks on the playa. However, if you only have a key lock, you should plan to lock the front wheel tonight so they can move it around ok.

Hope to see some folks this evening!
