Sunbeam, since you're so generous, if you stop by the meet and greet, I'll mix you a Martini chocolat a la Rhino that will curl your hair and tickle your fancy, and warm your toes all at once.Sunbeam56 wrote:Made it to the bottle store today.

Elliot, I sure hope Martini Steve shows up, I might learn something new to apply to my concoctive capabilities.
Those 'in the know' might even be gifted a limited edition Black Rock City Division of Geology shot glass. The reverse side contains our motto.....vini, vidi, pertudi. [we came, we saw, we drilled].
The week that just went by did so in a flash. I'm down to just two more jobs to clear utilites for. The ones that are scheduled for this week are CLEAR. I got the soil samples taken for the second of three engineering soil surveys, and wrote the lion's share of three major reports. Never a dull moment. We had one field report that was out of the ordinary this week that actually looked downright weird in photos. The drill rig was coring some shallow shale, and suddenly.....KETCHUP-colored drill cuttings started pouring out of the hole. Very strange. I'll see if I can find a pic to post.

So, in the last week of August, should I just be here giving bad advice to any prospective "birgin" who suddenly gets bit by the burning man bug?

Have you heard "Fuck you" by Lilly Allen?
Add it to the jukebox.
Rhino - definitely hoping to meet you soon! I'm a fossil geek. Not a hard core rock head like you - but I have a small and tasteful collection, and I'm into that rock hound thing.
Even went to Diamond State Park in Arkansas. Got all muddy - didn't find a thing.
Good thing too - I'd still be there if I had
I'm gonna taste the choc martinis - but its not my thing.
Since I want to REMEMBER TTITD, I'm likely to be a wino all week.

Just got back from Yggy's compound in his own secret otherwise undisclosed location. Thanks again for the help my friend. And Junior was more than just modestly impressed.

Promise to help with a downed tree and was going to take the truck.
Would turn over but not fire up.
First time that has happened.
Got back from the tree thing and went out to find the trouble.
Started right up!!!
Guess it just wanted the morning off.

These days, the first suspect, in my book, for an intermittent no-fire problem like this is a computer issue. Have a shop, or anyone who owns the right gadget, check for a Failure Code.FIGJAM wrote:...

You might also have it run on a scope, to look for a weak coil or coil-wire, (if this model has one coil, rather than eight of them). (My Dodge Dakota has eaten two coils in the last couple years, and one of those works intermittently.)
If they don't find anything with the electronic tools, you might want to carry a spare coil and whatever other component they think is a likely suspect, and learn how to replace it.
And join AAA. I just did.
Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Erm, it's a diesel, so no coil and very little that can go wrong.
Not throwing any codes and without symptoms they wouldn't know where to start.
I always find what's wrong before I take anything to a mechanic just to make sure they don't start playing "parts roulette" with my money.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Ah.... Silly me and my faulty memory. Well, the one thing that once kept Millicent's diesel engine from firing was a porous fuel hose. Apparently, air would seep into the hose, and it would take a lot of cranking to make it fire. You would know if it has been needing long cranking lately.
Modern diesels have an electric solenoid that operates the fuel on/off valve, and that solenoid may be controlled by electronics. That's a more likely suspect -- either the solenoid or the control-electronics. I see that Millicent's electronic thingie has been replaced at some point in its past. Your truck is probably newer, so now we are back to the Engine Management Computer, which even diesels have now.

You know, it's that radically inclusive thing going on in my heart. Take either one and add it to the jukebox, too, thanks.
Sunbeam, I'm glad to hear you enjoy the wonders that fossil-hunting and rockhounding offer us. The state park in Arkansas I know: Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, AR, is where you can hunt diamonds and keep what you find. A buddy of mine actually did drilling down there for the Arkansas Geological Commission, and found out that there's only 1 or 2 karats for every 8 tons of material removed. It's not a normal deposit; instead of being a diamond bearing kimberlite, it's a diamond-bearing lamprophyre.
I made it out to both Bonanza Opal Mine and Royal Peacock Opal Mine in Nevada last year, and came back with opals. Stick with me, kid, you've got a chance that way.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Definately not a kimberlite. Not sure that its a lamprophyre either. No unity of materials. While there were a lot of quartz pebbles, they were well rounded. The diamonds on display were rounded too. Mostly it was a clayish mud - more sedimentary than igneous.
I Dont recall any information that said what the accepted cause of the site was.
Interesting question...

Sunbeam, here's a couple thoughts to consider: first off, the areas they let you in to look for diamonds are usually plowed fields, and you're in the weathered zone, so you're going to see more of a sedimentary than an igneous footprint. Second, if other kinds of materials are alluvial or colluvial overwash in the area, they tend to leave their imprint on the deposit, too. Diamonds occur rounded because they're so brittle. Think about it for a minute....the hardest substance known to man and it's brittle...it makes sense when you realize that they have to be brittle so they can be faceted.
And you're right. It's not a diamond-bearing lamprophyre but a diamond-bearing lamproite. I was wrong, and stand corrected.
Just for a hoot, I took a gander at geology.com and found this on the origin of diamonds in the area:
"The occurrence of diamonds in Arkansas continues to intrigue geologists. About 100 million years ago a deep-source volcanic eruption occurred in this area bringing material from the mantle rapidly up to the surface. The rising magma was rich in gases that expanded to thousands of times the volume that they occupied while under the enormous pressures at mantle depth. This rapid gas expansion produced an explosion as the magma approached the Earth's surface. This explosion blasted a crater and blanketed the surrounding landscape with ejecta. Within the ejecta were many fragments of mantle rock that were carried up to the surface with the rising magma. These fragments are known as "xenoliths". They contained the diamonds. Over time the ejecta was weathered and a greenish soil formed above the crater. During the weathering process the least stable minerals were destroyed and the most stable minerals were concentrated in the soil. Diamonds are very resistant to weathering and were thus concentrated in the soil. "
That would make the emplacement Mesozoic in age. Lots of stuff happening in the Mesozoic.
Agreed, back to booze and foolishness.

Fuck Lily Allen and her prima donna attitudes and being a bitch to people. I've got a couple friends who've worked with her on shows, she's not what I'd call good people.
Hooray for pre-cooking, I got all my potatoes done (for breakfast with campmates, not any kind of public service) and vac-sealed. Hooray for the new vac-seal machine kicking so much ass, it's as if the company who made it had been taking notes on how we used it and what we liked and didn't like over the years.
I also got a bunch of other bins packed up and cleared for the playa, and the girl made big progress on another project on her list. Woohoo for productive Sundays!

Spent the weekend on the playa camping with the friends of the blackrock meteor shower camp, about 5 miles past BRC.
Had a good dinner, some tasty playa punch, and Will Rodgers Margaritas.
After dinner, all hell broke loose when a thunderstorms hit. Not much rain, but LOTS of wind.
Broke up 1 shade structure, but we all still had a fun time.
