knee injury, can't bike, how to get around?
I recently hurt my knee pretty bad and there is no way I could ride a bike around the playa for a week! I see 2 stroke motors on bikes is not permitted, electric motors only make it about 5 miles (just enough to get me stuck in deep playa) and I have no way to recharge it, I'm thinking about a goped, motorized scooter, but I hear they have problems with all the dust, what are my other options? I don't think I qualify for disabled, but there is no way I could bike or walk the distances I plan to go.
I'm sure I'm not the only burner with knee issues, what are my other options? Any suggestions?

Even if you did qualify for disabled, it's too late to submit the paperwork.
Wheelchair? Can probably buy on at a thrift store or flea market for less than 100. Try to get one with foot rests. You can take off the one for the good knee and use that leg to help push/pull.
You're probably going to have to accept a less far-flung burn.

I'm not so bad off that I need a wheelchair, just trying to figure out some kind of motorized option that isn't overly expensive and hopefully I could use off playa as well. I really with I could have a 2 stroke on a bike, that would be perfect, but I read that those are not permitted. Anyone know why? Is it the volume? 4 strokes are quieter and I could install one of those on a cruiser, would that be allowed?

My electric tricycle gets 25-30 miles between charges and with 4-6 hrs. to fully recharge.
You most likely would be able find a kindly person that would allow you to plug into their generator for charges.
However, at this late date and without heroic effort, I do not think that you would have the time to electrify a trike or a bike.
Do not worry; once you arrive you will find a way to explore.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the dust it would kick up.greenthumb85 wrote:I'm not so bad off that I need a wheelchair, just trying to figure out some kind of motorized option that isn't overly expensive and hopefully I could use off playa as well. You can use a gas powered scooter, as long as it's standing. You can use an electric assist bike. You can use a Segway.

I have seen people really twist knees hitting a dust spot on a (2 wheel) bicycle. So electric tricycle with playa-legal pedals. Have 2 batteries and charge at Snow Koan Solar or the Mobility Camp. Or sell your ticket and work on recovery.

What do you have for a battery pack? I think I could rig something up in time, but all the kits I've seen only rate their life at 5-10 miles. Do you know where I could get something like what you have?Meat Hunter wrote:My electric tricycle gets 25-30 miles between charges and with 4-6 hrs. to fully recharge.

Re: knee injury, can't bike, how to get around?
I purchased my turn-key kit from Ebikekit. My battery is a Lithium Ion battery and is specific to my kit.
My kit was pretty much plug and play, installed in 1.5 hrs. and was shipped as soon as I placed my order.
I ordered the largest 36v lithium Ion battery and asked that they configure my kit for the LED control head (which they did for no additional charge)
If you wish more information, I suggest that you e-mail AND phone the owner Jason Kraft as soon as possible. Speak only to Jason. He is a good guy and he will do what needs to be done to make you happy.

If you contact Jason, please tell him that an archaeologist from Mississippi sent you.

Re: knee injury, can't bike, how to get around?
Thanks for the help, but wow, those are pricey! No wonder the ones I was looking at before got so few miles, they were MUCH cheaper! My spending limit is around 400, anyone else with suggestions?Meat Hunter wrote:I purchased my turn-key kit from Ebikekit. My battery is a Lithium Ion battery and is specific to my kit.

Check craigs list for electric wheelchairs.
You should find one for a couple of hundred.

Holy shit dude, what more do you want to hear?
Yeah, the cheap options don't have much range. That's why they're cheap.
Need more range? You need more money.
Don't have money? You gotta go with the cheap option.
Other than finding some great deal on Craiglist, there's nothing more to this. So deal with it.
