Re: Quick ice question
They offer both.
Although on occasion one or the other is in short supply.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Re: Quick ice question
Last time I bought ice there I got bagged ice cubes. I'm not sure about block ice. Bagged ice is easier to transport back to your camp, but block ice is better for keeping cold and it'll last longer.

Re: Quick ice question
Definitely both. Each truck-load comes with about 75 % crushed ice and 25 % blocks. Sometimes the blocks run out before the next truck-load is opened. So if they are out of blocks, ask how long before the blocks become available.
Re: Quick ice question
In fact buying one of each works really well. Put the block on the bottom of your cooler, then your food, then the crushed ice. The block stays cold far longer than the crushed, you might replenish the crushed daily and the block less often.
Re: Quick ice question
Follow up question : do you remember what is the volume of one bag of ice ? I'm considering putting it in large ziploc bags in order to drink the melted ice. Don't know what size of bags to buy yet

Re: Quick ice question
They're 8 pound bags, so 1 and 1/2 gallon should do it.

Re: Quick ice question
The blocks fit perfectly in a two, gallon bag.

Two-gallon bags ftw! Bring them with you as I have never been able to find them in Reno or Fernley.

To the original poster. You will have no problem finding Arctica, and those visits will be one of the highlights of the week
I plan to fill my bike trailer with every visit to the ice house, and then share the bags with those I meet while riding further out into Black Rock City...
...keeping in the spirit of Burning Man culture and tapping into the new paradigm of the "shared" economy with a reasonable $2 mark-up per bag. (I kid, I kid).
