Let me give you just ONE example. At the time, it was called the Tower of Pisa. Then, to save a few lira, they didn't do a geologic investigation in advance, or so the story goes.

Somehow, I don't think it's Bertha that's the problem. It's a lack of knowledge on the part of the project management team at both WSDOT and the consultant.

Heck, they have no less than six of these operating in Beijing (OK, OK, so the machines are Herrenknechts and not Robbins TBMS), and the Chinese are making rings around that city for more and more subways. Long bores, short bores, big bores, little bores......keeps their engineers from getting bored.
