hello Burngins.
Greetings Burngins, Sophmores and "3rd year Joes "
Just a quick note, to tell you IPBA: "It'll Probably Be Alright".
Just be sure to breathe. Drink water. Open your eyes.
Know, the only thing for sure, is "nothings for sure".
Do your research into self reliance, make your plan, and do your best.
Knowing, you'll forget something, something won't work as it should, and something will break.
Also know, you are going to a happy place.
People are there for fun. No one wants to "harsh you".
People there will be helpful, kind, and friendly.
They will share.
Yup, there will be ass hats. walk away, they are not worth your time.
Please come with an open mind, thick skin, and no expectations.
Do what you want, as long as you don't step into what others want.
There is no doing it wrong......or right. Don't let anyone tell you different.
Follow the few rules, they are for very good reasons.
Ask for help. People love to help.
Offer help, it feels great.
give and receive hugs and smiles, according to your comfort level.
Know other options are just that, and "no means no", and "silence is not consent"
it's gonna be a very different experience. good for some, some will never return......some will be "lifers", some will go home early.
IT'S ALL OK

Good advice.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Carry water when you are exploring and remember, if you are at someone's camp they do not want you trash - carry it back to your own camp.

Re: hello Burngins.
Howdy ho,
Yes, bring water, and a cup, everywhere. Always be responsible for your own trash, pick up extra.
Go beyond the city, past the Man and the Temple, to where there appears to be nothing. Go there.
If you are passing something and think “I should do that”, do it.
If you are passing something and think “I should not do that”, do it!
If you think “someone should do that”, do it.
If it is being climbed on, you must climb on it.
Mutant vehicles and bars are not required to tolerate you. Screw them if they don't.
Do not get sucked into Center Camp too long. It is great. You could spend the whole Burn there. Don’t.
Everyone isn’t suddenly cool and trustworthy because they are at the Burn.
If someone is making you seriously uncomfortable, tell them, tell someone.
Follow your instincts, unless they suck.
Enjoy the art today, for tomorrow it burns.
Find 30 interesting things to do in the Guide, you will probably only see 2 of these.
Settle all petty personal grievances IN THE DOME !!!
Find out when the Rabbits and Carrots go to war on the playa, join the carrots.
If you see a short line, get in it, find out what it is for before it becomes a long line.
Bring it.
A gifting economy and inclusion does not mean that others owe you anything. It’s on you. My biggest problem is with those who hear “gifting” and think, “what do I get from others?” This shows a totally selfish perspective dressed up as enlightenment. A gift should be what radiates from you, not what others can do for you. Gift your time, your positive presence, offer to help, carry something for someone else, if you are gifted a snow cone or a drink, ask if they need an ice run. If you see something that needs to be done, that is why you are here. Participate. Make the city work, don’t just observe. Please try to do more than stay out all night at Robot Heart, sleeping til 3, then scrounging off others for food, shelter and drink. Bring it. Shelter is more important than costumes, food is more important than DJs, good lighting is more important than headdresses, giving is more important than receiving. Remember fires are hot and coals can burn feet. If you go to a Burn, bring a gallon of water.

Well, Yggy, you got my name wrong. But everything else is good advice and a good reminder.
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

I know 3rd year Joe, 3rd year Joe, was a friend of mine, you, dear dear BSG, are no "3rd year Joe", let alone sophomoric, in any sense. You were an instant vet.

Re: hello Burngins.
Yay!
I loved all of this! Thanks Yggy and Lonesomebri! Great stuff.
I'm so nervous and so excited for my first burn.
I'm having a great time preparing, meeting people and making art. 5 months to go feels both too far away and just around the corner.

Great post Yggy.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.
