Isnt Dragados supposed to be an awesome underground contractor. Why did WSDOT choose thm at Bid Opening. Low Cost I suppose. And the risk was too much for all other companies that probably did some geo surveys.
Over 857 miles of tunnels through all varieties of geological conditions. They tout. So, only a few miles on AK Way with STP, and youre stuck. Hmmm. They should have took the Underground Tour to see what was down there.

Gray Coyote, you just brought to mind one of my favorite jokes that I played on a McDonalds order-taker at the window one night. I hate 'suggestive selling', when you're done ordering and SAY SO, they say something stupid like "Would you like a hot apple pie with that for only fifty cents?" or some other such garbage.GreyCoyote wrote:These are not the droids you are looking for...
I drove from the order board around to the window to pay, and asked her why she was trying to suggestive sell me, even with me saying my order was done.
"Well, like, our manager, like, he says to do it."
What a dodge. Somebody else to take the blame. She took a sip of her drink. I changed my voice again, dropping it a couple of octaves, and said,
"Well, your Jedi mind tricks don't work on me. The order stands as given."
She spewed her drink all over her order screen. I'm sitting in the truck, quietly thrilled. Yes, my work is done.

My wife is having our baby, and I'm going to Burning Man anyway, because I think she can just send me an email and I can blip myself home in the blink of an eye from Black Rock Desert. Hey, there's no problem with leaving her to deal with it by herself... I mean come on, it's Burning Man! I can't miss that!
Hey I'll be sending her a child support check now and then, what's the big deal?

Sorry man, but as a guy who has had to work minimum wage for awhile (not as of the past few years), it's kind of a do-it-or-die thing at some places. At the theater I worked at, we would get less hours and possibly reprimanded/fired for "Not following procedure" when we failed to upsell or try suggestive selling. And yeah, we hate it too. A lot. But I had to do it if I wanted more than ten-fifteen hours a week.^Rhino! wrote:Gray Coyote, you just brought to mind one of my favorite jokes that I played on a McDonalds order-taker at the window one night. Yup - as a former retail manager I can verify that the upselling is mandatory. One reason I don't do that job any more.Ano wrote:At the theater I worked at, we would get less hours and possibly reprimanded/fired for "Not following procedure" when we failed to upsell or try suggestive selling. Re: PAGE TWO
Is this the year of TOTAL disconnect from the realities of real life? This isn't even like a total lack of self-awareness. It's almost like these people have literally just stopped breast feeding last week and finally left the crib into the wide world of real life.
- How could I ever imagine that my wife could have our baby in her third trimester?!?! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?!?! Anyway, I'm going to be raving at Camp AlaBLASTERZ, having left the wife at home, and I'd like to be on the phone at least if she's giving birth (can they text me to inform me too?) -- but like, not pay too much for long distance. It's only our first child after all. How can I be there for the birth of our kid, but not really be there-there? (EDIT: looks like the guy saw some sense).
- Hey, will my prolapsed uterus mess with my burn? I mean like, I only got it like two weeks ago in a tractor incident, and it really hurts... and leaks ... and I need a colostomy bag because I can't hold my shits. I've got no bike, trike, or Segway, and can't be assed to buy one just for one prolapsed uterus, not that I have any money to begin with. Will people dump the contents in the portapotties for me and haul me around on a rickshaw? It is extremely important that I see everything at Burning Man.
- So holy shit, I'd really like to make it to the burn taking this road people call "the remains of the Oregon Trail" in my Honda Civic. Supposedly, I might run into some reenactment nuts of some sort... but whatever, I'm really more interested in bypassing all those long lines that I'm only ASSuming will make the trip longer -- not, you know, the last couple miles directly before BRC, or pot holes, gravel roads, dried out carcasses, fallen tree limbs, rock landmarks, derelict vehicles people cast aside looking for help -- or dysentery -- that I might encounter. I might even be able to take a river raft in the last stages to save some time. Has anyone else taken the Oregon Trail?
- I can't fucking believe you guys are charging $40 per car for ingress. A king's ransom!! A negative incentive like that can't possibly inspire people to try to reduce their costs through sharing rides for this neo-eco-terrorism conspiracy agenda you're pushing! Can't BMOrg.org dip into that endless reservoir of cash and rent some Russian military hovercrafts to transport all of us and our hex-yurts? If my restaurant-napkin calculations are correct, it would save us $35 per person which would more than pay for a dry dock (or what about a PIER?!!). There might be a problem with dust, but since I've never actually gone, it can't be that bad, right?
- I totally tried every sale and yet got fucking SCREWED like a BITCH by each and every one of the multiple opportunities I was granted to buy a ticket. I'm totally embittered that I wasted time I could've been spending on Facebook dealing with this shit. Now I have an RV and some friends from Nigeria who promised me a direct deposit in my bank account to pay for their tickets, and to pay for this RV and a ticket for myself as a bonus! All this hinged on whether I could get them some tickets for their trip of a lifetime. But now ... now that has not come to be. I'm at a total loss as to what I can do. I mean, like, do I just sit here and keep hoping and praying? What should I do guys?

Re: PAGE TWO
Today's totally awesome underground contractor/consultant more often than not is living on his past reputation. I've known more than a few in my time, and inevitably, if the up-front geologic report isn't done or done RIGHT, the camel dung hits the ardent supporter of sports (the shit hits the fan). Broken equipment is the least of their worries. Some horizontal directional drilling contractors aren't even aware that totally one half of their equipment investment is down hole when drilling is underway. The rig on top is the other half. What's downhole? The drill rods, for one, have to be specially forged for the bending radius and the stresses they encounter. Bits and reamers cost huge amounts of money, more so if diamond-tipped tooling is involved. Tracking equipment and gyroscopes costs more than some operators' salaries.MFOB wrote:Isnt Dragados supposed to be an awesome underground contractor. Why did WSDOT choose thm at Bid Opening. Over 857 miles of tunnels through all varieties of geological conditions. They tout. So, only a few miles on AK Way with STP, and youre stuck. Hmmm. They should have took the Underground Tour to see what was down there.
I saw one contractor with a 72" diameter backreamer (custom made for the job) in his equipment stores one day. The contractor told me he actually has the office accountant come out with a calculator and stopwatch just to insure that an adequate amount of time is spent to move cuttings on each individual drill rod, and that the total volume of fluids pumped agrees with the per rod calculations of mud used as well as the time spent per foot of rod pulled in the hole. The accountant was the stereotypical small man with glasses, but he wore a set of Carhart coveralls over his shirt and tie (he DID wear jeans, a hard hat, and steel-toed boots). The drill operator was deferring to the guy's judgements like he was God himself.
If they don't have the equipment AND the qualified personnel to use it, they should stay the hell at home.

While the public discussion on these items has largely stalled, there is still a stalwart camp keeping the faith and pushing for our future growth needs.
