Post by Casanova » Mon Aug 11, 2014 2:46 pm

Curious about the rules of a pool at burning man, are they banned, have they ever been allowed, why, how? I've heard your not allowed to have one, anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

Banned for health reasons. Absolutely no public access to any standing body of water.

If it is indeed private then I don't imagine you'd have any trouble.
A slip n slide is certainly not standing water.
Any time I have seen a small pool it has been disgustingly and amazingly filthy and gross. yuk yuk yuk...

Now, mr mister and the foam shower tank thing,...those are cool

Well, with some fancy logistics it HAS been done a few years back, several years in a row - but it wasn't in a camp, it was in a guy named Jason's bus.
You can't have a public access tub of any sort.

Yes, yes it does. As such "that slip n slide" at the aquatic avian lagoon got shut down last year from about mid week on IIRC. Health Dept. I don't think it's ever been shut down before last year, anyone with inside info?

Keep in mind that any type of pool or hot tub, is going to be filled will water from filthy, sweaty, unbathed people with swamp ass going on. With the hot desert sun, I'm sure that ass water can fester into some mighty fine bacteria growth.
That's probably the best reason I can think of, but I'm sure there are others.

The old timers on this board are sorely depleted. So, I don't remember when the whole mud pit bathing thing got shut down. And I'm confused as to whether or not that was the Human Carcass Wash, but, health department has been closing down communal bathing in a single pool/puddle/swamp since before I started going to the event. Before the turn of the century, even.

Human Carcass Wash is still around...I think they get around the communal bathing/swimming issue by using water sprayers instead of a shared pool of any kind.

There is NO WAY you'd find my fuzzy tuckus submerged in the same water that had caressed the nether-regions of hundreds of other Burners. There isn't enough chlorine in Reno to make that dog hunt.

No offense, but frankly, there are some seriously SKANKY creatures running around at TTITD. A communal aquatic-anything would be a smorgasbord for most of the nasty diseases!

The pool was closed due to AIDS.

Actually with good enough filtration system a tub can be kept nice.
Jason's hot tub busses were set up well and worked great.
But it's a project for sure and it still has to be entirely private.
I used to have the dream of bringing a hot tub to BRC myself but decided it was too much effort on top of what I already do.
If I did it would be inside an enclosed trailer. And the door would be kept locked.

As long as you've got a $600, generator, and don't mind taking 250+ gallons of gray water with you...

It's a health department and BLM thing, and public pools/jacuzzis have not been allowed in at least a decade.

My understanding is that basically in order to meet health department guidelines for having a public pool/jacuzzi, you're pumping that water full of enough chemicals to make it hazardous to the playa. Dust is another factor, all it takes is for a cover to not be on for a few seconds at the wrong time and enough playa gets in to completely destroy most filtration systems. Several camps tried everything, including using environmentally friendly pool chems and having dedicated pool/tub staff to try and clean and maintain it. But in every case, they proved to health department hazards and graywater disasters. Even with a company coming in to pump out graywater, there's a significant amount of splashing that occurs.

Check page three of Elliot's School Bus 101 thread. Jason quite successfully had a hot tub at BRC for years.
It can be done. He even had a heat exchanger to heat the water from the bus engine heat.
