Re: Playa Conditions 2014
The Playa Sharknado has been upgraded to a level 5 Sharkcano. Volcanic ash can sometimes be mistaken for snow.
If caught in a Sharkcano:
•Seek immediate shelter and stay there.
•If you’re far from shelter, sit down, cover your face with your shirt and wait. Carry shark repellant with you at all times!
•Be on alert for moving vehicles. If you are driving a vehicle, STOP and wait for the air to clear of flying sharks & lava. You will not be able to see where you are going and could hurt yourself or others.
•DO NOT DRIVE your vehicle. You will attract the more aggressive sharks and they may tear up the playa surface eating you.
•Relax and wait until conditions change.
•Do not ride your bike; Sharks will devour you in just a few feet.
•Stay put and tune into BMIR, 94.5 FM for the latest info.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
For anyone using the WeatherBug app I just noticed you can add BRC as a location. Looks like interesting weather.
There's a notice right now for winds gusting to 35 MPH.
"waves on Pryamid lake: 2 to 4 feet with highest waves from mid lake to the eastern shore. Small boats will be prone to capsizing and should remain off the lake...."
Wow.
Looking at the 10 day forecast highs in the low 90's & lows in the mid 50's. I was expecting warmer days

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
Road to BRC closed by rain and hail until further notice, as of four hours ago. They recommend nobody leave Reno for BRC until further notice.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
Looking interesting - good tip in the article - wrapping feet in garbage bags will keep mud from shoes.

If your feet are small enough, bread wrappers make good short term mud boots.
Re: Playa Conditions 2014
The ten day forecast looks pretty nice but definitely looks like I should bring some extra rain gear this year just in case (and boots for mud.)
Re: Playa Conditions 2014
The weather seems oddly similar to what we've experience in Calgary for the last few days.
Most hot weather.. high +/-85, low +/-55, with evening thunderstorms and hail storms.

And now back to our scheduled programming, courtesy of Mr Curley...

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
Social media posts from today show hard work being done and drying conditions with still some areas drying up. Minimal dust due to the rains, but that doesnt mean much for the rest of us, since by the time we get there that nice dustless crusty survace will be well tracked over and ready to be whipped up by the wind. Forecast shows epic conditions ahead, but as we have all learned as of late, forecast should be taken lightly and anything can happen on the open playa.
Thanks to all out there bearing the elements and working extra hard to get ready for the main event! Wishing I was there to lend a hand!

I'm guessing no update means no extreme weather.

Spoke to a couple of camp mates who are already there. Very high winds (sustained at about 30 mph, with some 80 mph gusts), very dusty (obviously), very soft playa that is already starting to form dunes.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
They had to clear the Man build site yesterday at some point as "weather" (dark clouds) came in, based on a DPW members instagram. Don't know for how long, but it looks like it's a good year to have all the planning in place for extremes.remi wrote:I'm guessing no update means no extreme weather.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
Looking at the weather reports, keeping in mind that things are different ON the playa, the forecast looks pretty good. But I'm not liking sand dunes. I just bought a trike & it has pretty narrow tires. I really don't want to find out how much wind will destroy my tent either.AfricanFire wrote:4.25ish and EWhere are they camped?
I've been watching the storms roll in for the last week or so & it seems like most of the weather is coming from the South West. My plan is to put my tent very close to my van on the North East side.
I guess as a last resort I can sleep in my van but I was hoping to not open it very much.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
For the first time in many years, I will have my art car on the playa. The last time was 2008, and the dunes were pretty deep. I never had the car on sand prior to that, but it worked amazing--just like a dune buggy.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
I guess I better bring a backup tent for my backup tent. I'm pretty sure my main tent and first backup tent wouldn't survive 50 Mph winds....
