Walk-In Camping Question (s)

Post by beerock29 » Fri Aug 08, 2014 6:35 pm

my friend isn't sure if he can get me into the place where he's camping, so I'm considering the walk-in area. Has anyone ever camped there, and if so what has been your experience? I have a tent, sleeping bag, cooler, lanyard(sp) and other camp needs, but I'm curious as to whether or not a shade structure is essential out there? I really don't have money for one, and I decided to go to Burning Man just a week ago after spending a couple weeks thinking over whether or not I wanted to make the trip. Anyway, did you guys enjoy it, or did you feel weird or lonely out there?

thanks

-Kim

I haven't done walk in camping.
Shade is pretty much necessary, in my view. I hate the heat. There are other places to camp that aren't reserved and aren't walk-in. Only camp there if it's drawing you, because you want that distance.

IMHO, the two essential elements for survival at BM are the same as for any desert: shade and water. There is no getting around these two things. If you dont have these two things then you have no business being there.

So spend the money on black shade. It may not need to be very big, but it is essential. Maybe someone else can help you with a larger area, but dont count on it. Always bring your own.

Got shade and water? Now lets talk about bacon...

I'm not sure if you are implying you thought that was your only other option... ?? Walk in is very sparse, very few people out there. It's a long walk out to the outer perimeter road to begin with, then even farther out to your tent. You have to not really want to be at Burning Man, or really like doing a LOT of walking.

Just because you won't be camping with your friend does not mean you need to be in the walk-in camping area. There will be plenty of areas all over the city to camp where you can drive your car right up and set up camp, you do not have to be part of a camp. I would not recommend walk-in camping unless you specifically want much more privacy/quiet than the rest of the city offers.

I'm moving this over to the Shelter & Camping board, since that's a better fit for general discussions about camping.

I agree with Milayna - camping solo doesn't mean you have to go to walk-in camping. Find an open spot on the streets, check with the neighbors (assuming there is one) to let them identify what they feel their boundary is to you (and make some friends), then pull in and set up!

Walk in camping doesn't mean that you have to walk, you just can't use motor vehicles or equipment. Bikes and other pedal powered creations are allowed.

When they built the Octic Oasis in walk in a few years back, they had human powered carts of some sort to get all of that lumber out there. It was large scale and sat a few hundred yards from the road.

I got to enjoy the serenity one night in the crows nest at the top, while sipping some warm PBRs. Very soothing indeed

Hypothetical question: if you are an early arrival and late departure, would it be considered improper to drop your stuff off directly from a vehicle long before gate opens? My understanding was the idea behind walk-in was to eliminate noise and vehicles DURING the burn, but everything I have seen published on the subject is silent as to the before and after periods.

Thoughts?

Octic Crew was EA, they brought everything in on carts. I'm sure they would have loved having the truck next to the build site if possible.

Maybe they were just being purists, not really sure.

My memory is that there's trash fence between the cars and the camping.

I don't remember trash fence but I do remember a string of flags.

We camp there every year
First the positive Plenty of room for camping and parking.
Tends to be more on the quiet side as if anywhere in Black Rock City is quiet.
Not a lot of people walking through your camp'
Negative It tends to be more windy and dusty due to no structure blocking the winds
and people coming into and leaving the city.
