Did you ever go to the park to feed the ducks with a big bag of stale bread? You start out with small bite size pieces, maybe a few at a time. You try and aim some at the ducks on the outskirts of the flock.

Eventually you realize you've been there for quite a while and you look and you've got several whole slices left. You decide to chuck all of the slices in at once.
