Luggage wheels work on the playa?
Luggage wheels work on the playa?
Question is: Can I roll my suitcase on its wheels across the playa? I won't need to go that far, just from the burner express bus stop to my camp. I am thinking about having a large camping bagpack for most of my stuff and a suitcase with wheels stuffed with water bricks

Re: Luggage wheels work on the playa?
I'd risk it. It'll probably be okay, although the wheels will get hella dusty and I kind of hope you're headed to the 9 o'clock side because historically it has slightly fewer ruts and drifts. At worst, you will end up dragging it a bit. Oh, well . . .
Note for when you leave: I got lectured once by Amtrak about having too much dust on my suitcase, and had to make a hurried attempt at cleaning them up a bit right there in the station. (The bags weren't that dusty, but they did have a point.) So keeping your suitcase upright as much as possible and brushing it off before you give it to baggage handlers is a smart idea.

In 2012 the Reno airport put our luggage in plastic bags coming back.
In 2013 I cleaned them off in my hotel, but they still put them in plastic.
I would guess that unless you have large wheels on your luggage, it will dig in and not roll on the playa when filled with water so expect to drag it or make other arrangements.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

I will cautiously add, if you look desperate enough dragging your luggage along the playa, some kind soul will hopefully give you a lift. Things seem to always work out.

Put me in the "expect it to drag" camp!

Re: Luggage wheels work on the playa?
A lot of the playa will be a nice hard surface that you could roller skate on without problem.
Other parts are soft and anything smaller than a bicycle wheel will just bog down. My experience is that the roads start off in pretty good shape but after a few days they get torn up, so the answer will be different for arrivals on Sunday vs Wednesday.
The worst case scenario is if it has rained recently (which I understand it has been doing) and instead of being hard and smooth the surface is soft and mushy.
I would say to go ahead and roll your bag across the hard sections but you might want to carry it across the soft sections.

I'm usually on larger wheels and it's bumpy and uncomfortable and I don't know why I haven't bitten my tongue off. I'm with DAB and whoever recommended a hand truck.

If you have a bike, rest the luggage on the seat and handle bars and push the bike.

Maybe you could fashion a toboggan and tow your way to camp with lots of room for gear. If the playa is quite dry, the coefficient of friction might make it workable.

You may find in thrift shops or on Craigslist a folding luggage carrier with 5-6" flat tread wheels. Much better than 2-3" oval wheels.

I just saw folding hand-trucks at Costco for under $20. You couldn't pay me enough to rely on luggage wheels out there.

We saw people dragging and people rolling. Don't count on rolling. BUT. It's not hard to get help. Don'[t be afraid to ask. The 2nd or 3rd person will balance your bag on their bike and help you get there.

I was planning on rolling mine. But, now I shall politely ask for help, if I end up dragging it. I'm heading to the 9:00 side so I hope that'll help.
