Free camping night before gates open

Post by juicedutch » Thu Aug 21, 2014 12:36 pm

I am driving my campervan, Bessy, to BM on Saturday from Jackson Wyoming.. I'm looking for a place to park and crash on Saturday night so I can wake up early and get to the gates when they open. Does anyone know of any good spots along HWY 447 or around Gerlach/Empire that are free to park and camp?

Haven't been since 2010, so stoked to get back out there!

Not anywhere along 447 or in Gerlach/Empire. The people don't want you clogging up the area even more, the shoulders are too soft and therefore dangerous, and the police will be agressively getting you out of the way--with possible rides back to Reno sans your vehicle.
You might be able to camp along Pyramid Lake, but that will not be free! You can buy a permit in the Nixon store. Or you can try someplace further out. Remember, a lot of americans and out-of-country tourists are traveling right now, so camping space is at a premium. You may have to pay, and you might want to make those arrangements now.

I've looked for the same from the other direction. As for free, your best bet is a rest stop along the I80 Winnemucca, Lovelock and Wadsworth are the last three on the way in. Generally you allowed to stay for 8 hrs.
