Re: Large Sound Camp DJ Line-ups.
Not attacking the music. I like EDM because I can sleep well through it after all these years. Seriously. (excluding dub, that shit is impossible)headead wrote:^ why can't it be both ? Like I tried to explain in my first post, there is art in creating a musical experience, so just look it at from that perspective and its all good.
Now, all the bs that comes with the promoters, etc., .. well.. we have to deal with it I guess.
I understand that, which is why I mentioned the corporate driven festival situation.. I just felt like, in a way, the music itself was under attack so I decided to chip in.Simon of the Playa wrote:this thread was about THE LINEUPS BEING RELEASED SO EARLY AND ITS CONSEQUENCES....
so, until we deal with the fact that the demand for tickets is DIRECTLY RELATED to the LINE-UPS being released, all of the mamby pamby ethereal crap you speak of is a moot point.
the lowest common denominator of EDM is what sells, and is attracting the mainstream to our fair city..
period.
by releasing the line-ups early, this only makes the problem worse.
period.
It is the promoters announcing the big names, attracting the "festy" crowd. People who have just heard about Burning Man as a music venue, who don't give a shit about the principles, the art, the community. Our festival does not need them. Do not announce the performers, do not advertise as though this were a commercial venture. Do not cross that line, and the non-burners will not be overly interested in our dusty lakebed. While I love the excitement of burgins and helping them learn, I am far from interested in facilitating the ones only there to party.
'Twas ever thus.

Re: Large Sound Camp DJ Line-ups.
Some people will sometimes make snarky comments on ePlaya about EDM or specific genres. Hey, I'm not a fan of polka, accordion or Eastern European acoustic music. But the snark is a joke and us just marking territory.I just felt like, in a way, the music itself was under attack so I decided to chip in.
Simon, who started the issue, was one of the creators of one of the largest large sound camps. No need to defend EDM, it is not endangered, and it is not in danger of extinction at BM. BM is in danger of extinction from some becoming many of the EDM fans though.

Re: Large Sound Camp DJ Line-ups.
Some would argue that there is craft in "matching beats" and art in "reading the crowd". I don't know that I disagree. Of course, my musical taste is odd enough. and I myself am socially "off" enough, that I've never spent much time in clubs, so it's hard for me to comment.
There is, in my understanding of art history, often a tension between those who make art and those who sell and promote it. The making itself requires long hours away from people, working out your ideas, and the selling has always been pretty social. Few people can straddle both. Maybe Twain and Dickens, with their lecture circuts. There's more, a lot more, but the ratio would be 10 to 1, at a very rough guess.

Don't freit, after a quick review of #BurningMan, I can assure you feather MOOP is going to be out of hand this year and be considered for the banned list again next year by a look at some of the headdresses and outfits being put together.
