Hi there, this will be my first Burning Man. Unfortunately my boyfriend was unable to get a ticket this year, and I was unable to line myself up with a camp so I will be camping solo!
I am a bit nervous and overwhelmed.. I've been to a few festivals before and I love to camp. My main concern is that I don't have a shade structure, so I'll get to bake in the oven that is my tent.
I'm doing pretty well with the supplies and packing. Arriving at the playa sometime on Wednesday, so excited!
Are there any other first timer solo burners out there?! Any first timer solo gals like myself?
Would love to connect with you all!!!!

Re: New Solo Burner Gal!
There are all sorts of first timers and soloers. They may not be reading this, as they might be on their way.
When you get there, find a space and introduce yourself to the neighbors. They should have shade, and if you are polite and ask and help and share and skedaddle when they are doing camp stuff, you'll have shade. I never had the experience of soloing, but those on this board that have say that it can be quite wonderful, and that they made friends they see, and even camp with, year after year.
Go, have fun.

Re: New Solo Burner Gal!
I'll be coming solo as well. But... next year.
I hope you make a lot of new friends.

Hey--
I'm soloing first year also. Was concerned about shade but not now. Check out my earlier posts, where i link to some solutions. Here's one: viewtopic.php?f=277&t=70367
My recommendation is to get a pair of Kelty Tarp poles and the Noah's tarp. You'll need some line as well. I recommend the bright eyes reflective stuff. I'm using a 12x12 noahs but there is a 9x9 I think.
Regardless your biggest problem is poles and learning to set them with stakes and ropes. It is intimidating at first and you'll suck but do it a few times and you'll be worrying about other prep besides shade real quick. Practice setting it up and learn the simple knots you need.
Rather than rebar I went w fatty 12" stakes. All can be had online and get to you within a business day of you act fast.
Good luck!
