Playa Conditions 2014
Re: Playa Conditions 2014
I'm worried by the fact that the hexayurt boom has taken place entirely in mild years.
Mine has 2" thick walls and 1.5" thick roof, so I'm betting it would be among the survivors. However it is still a bunch of pieces of foam stuck together with tape.

Mine held up to 45mph winds at Pyramid lake. It was breathing a little (slight lift) but stayed put
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
Coming to you live from the Playa. AT&T has service for now but I don't think it will last.
Sustained winds 10 to 20 mph with lots of dust all day. It died down about 9:00pm.
The surface is hard packed for about half an inch and then is soft soft underneath. It was partly cloudy today and actually pretty nice.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
We are a day early without EA passez. So we drove up to Gerlach to see whazzup.
There is a little bazaar in both Empire and Gerlach. Selling organic tea, EL wire and costume bits. Dust Masks.
The weather is gorgous. You can see the burn in the distance from Gerlach by the dust clouds. The man is a dark shadow in the swirling white clouds.
Travel from Fernley to Gerlach was a conga line of burners ! Cant wait to see some of those cars on the playa
I am especially fond of the boats...
Travel about 40 mph was the norm.

Beautiful sunshine in the desert right now. It looks like they're pulsing between Nixon and Empire. People are walking the road looking for tickets...

BMIR is reporting the playa in line is locked down, vehicles sitting there waiting for the mud to dry.
The playa webcam shows bikes getting around fine, but no art cars moving around.
GAS: a Sunday 3:40pm update reports "The Nixon gas station is out of gas, so they advise Burners to gas up before then."

Some art cars have an advantage over others.
Captain, you missed this one. But you'll get to miss the porta potties without service trucks too.

BMIR reports that they may have to shut down due to safety concerns (rain + electricity).

I am in lovelock. Very light sprinkles here. What is current condition of playa and waiting times? Is the gate going to open today?
I am thinking of getting a motel room if I have to wait overnight. Anyone with news?

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
BRC is closed until midday Tuesday due to rain and standing water. Playa is un-drivable. Law enforcement is turning cars back.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
I talked with a Pershing County Commishioner who stated that a sign has been put up on east side of Lovelock warning approaching burners. He said Fernley and Reno are filling up. Good news for inn keepers.
Re: Playa Conditions 2014
Most of the day, after the initial rain periods, Gerlach webcam keeps showing what looks like relatively clear air over BRC, but dark clouds after dark clouds going over the hills immediately to the North of the pavement to Gate Road, looking like there's frequent dropping of water. Even if it's not falling on the pavement or playa, but only on the hills, it runs down the hills and onto the edge of the playa, pooling on the playa, making for concentrated wet right at the access points. If that rain on the hills doesn't stop soon, even if the playa under BRC dries enough for vehicles to move around BRC, they're screwed well into Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday before the ground is dry enough at the playa edge to pass vehicle traffic getting on/off the playa.

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
With the intense rain, thunder and lightening we had Monday can anyone officially confirm or deny the "rumor" that someone was indirectly hit by lightening? The "rumor" had it that the person was not hurt but that the art/mutant car he/she was in was hit and that the person ended up with burn marks on his/her shoes. I remember thinking that one of the lightening strikes was mighty close and I was at 5 & E. I'd swear the cell was directly above my tent

Re: Playa Conditions 2014
I don't know if that's "officially" possible. For the organizers of the event, or any other officials--BLM, LEO, etc.--would have to have credible witnesses or hard evidence. Now, if someone who saw the shoes in question, but isn't connected to the burning man organizers, told you they had, would that be enough for you?

Since rumour further has it that this person was one of the Montreal burners, I may well know for sure once they start firing up their computers again. Dusty Beavers was at 6:15 & D.

The lightning strike was confirmed to me by several Rangers. I also heard it was in an art car, and that the person was injured but okay. The rest of the details I don't know.
