Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Monday morning, the playacam was showing Gate road and it's flowing nicely. Some for mid afternoon, but with a lot more dust stirred up.
https://twitter.com/bmantraffic had been saying Monday morning wait times on Gate Road around 1/2 to 3/4 hour, and averaging ~2 hours from Hwy 34 @ 8 Mile to Wadsworth. Mid afternoon Monday, and the Gate Road time was reported to be 1 to 2 hours, with 2:36 hours to get from 8 Mile to Wadsworth.
Every time I checked, the Gerlach webcam was showing nice flow & spacing through Gerlach. (edit: just saw some congestion in town on the webcam, but not packed bumper to bumper). In the distance, good spacing could be seen on the road out of Gerlach towards Empire. The cam also showed a huge cloud of dust being raised over Gate Road.
So what was your experience?

Left camp on Sunday at 1 PM hit the pavement at 3:30 PM. Fernley by 5:30 pm give or take. Best ever. As far as I can tell, they were not pulsing lanes. Normal lane merges with pulsing onto 34.
Not sure why this is working so well, unless large numbers are waiting until Tuesday. Or God forbid, the ridiculous vehicle passes worked.

Left camp at 8 am on Sunday, was on pavement 45 mins later. Seeing reports of it only taking 2.5 hours to hit pavement mid-day, I wish I'd just slept in!

45 minutes from camp to pavement. Left at 4.30am this morning.
Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Churning the https://twitter.com/bmantraffic tweets from Sunday noon to Monday 16:59, the worst time so far was right after the Temple Burn. Not a big surprise.
The times where. It let up to free flow ~3:00 am. As the sun was coming up, some waits, for the morning up to 3/4 hour waits to get on the pavement, with the afternoon extending to a 1:30 hour average.
Wait time to exit the playa to pavement:

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
What do you guys think of this theory?
More early entry passes and Sunday arrival make the Sunday/Monday exodus more flowing because it spreads out the rushes and waves of traffic. Also, people being anxious about Monday traffic causing them to leave Sunday? I heard a lot of that (I didnt go, just from friends)
Seems like the event used to be more in the confines of Monday to Monday. Nowadays, its early entry/sunday >>>> more sporadic exodus times, easing exodus.
Just a guess?
I left Monday at Noon in 2012 and hit pavement in a half hour.

Left camp @8:20 Sunday night, hit pavement @10:20PM.
In fernley about 1:00 in the morning.
It was so nice Sunday night, and very cool to see all the tail lights for as far as I can see.

Posting from the playa: there's still a lot of people here. Telling people they can stay til Tuesday really seems to have made Exodus easy. At least for Monday; I'll report on how Tuesday traffic is tomorrow!

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
out of camp, Sunday 6:30A, hit pavement about an hour later. No traffic stalls on I-80 as in years past. Took a brief nap at the Donner Rest stop. Home and in hot shower at 3:30.

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Easiest exodus I've ever had. Left around 2:30am Monday morning and hit pavement before 4. Flowing traffic the entire time once on pavement. Entry and exodus were a BREEZE this year. I left camp around the same time last year and it took me nearly 6 hours to hit pavement. So excellent to have it go so quickly. Awesome burn year.

It only took four and a half hours from camp to Reno. Not bad at all. I left at 2300 on Sunday.
Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Left 6am Monday and rolled 10mph all the way to the pavement. No slowdowns or congestion to 447 north heading to PNW.

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Left Monday, from camp at ~1:15 PM, got through the gates onto the road at about 2:00. Waited about 20 minutes. The traffic on the road was actually slower on average than the gate line.
At least I got to break from it to go on 447 (see ya suckers!). Overall, not bad!

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Less than an hour 12:30 pm to 1:20, only bottle neck was where 4 lanes went to 2 but drivers were letting each other on line by turn left to right. Smooth transition to the asphalt. Slowing to 40 - 45 by Nixon, crazy passing motorists then risking all. Decided to turn to Fernley instead of Wadsworth or Reno for fueling. Gas was 3.45 at Pilot and the other spot. I80 traffic was heavy over Donner Pass from Labor Day trippers from California. I enjoyed waving to other obvious burners along the way. I took the 20 to Grass valley off the Ridge, easy sailing off of the freeway to Marysville and home.
Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
In 2012, realising I needed a day more than planned to hose down the rental truck, and wanting to avoid a big line, we bailed immediately before Temple burn. Maybe 90 mins to pavement.
Sounds like exodus is getting sorted? Or is it a lucky blip?
(I have to say that the drive to Reno was, at a few moments, a bit 'disconcerting', despite having been well behaved for the previous 24 hours. First time burner, and no matter how much one reads, nothing prepares for that dark drive...

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Left camp at 9:00am on Monday morning--an hour later than we had hoped. Expected a several hour wait to leave and kept provisions and water handy. The vehicle never stopped until we got to Gerlach so we could say goodbyes to camp mates in other cars.
Maybe those vehicle passes and the burner express program did the trick!

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
We left Saturday night around midnight after the man (finally) burned. Took us about an hour to hit pavement and then was free flowing all the way to Fernley. I hear it wasn't much different in the morning. I should have slept in.

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Left Sunday morning about 1030am... after packing up and picking up art up out in Deep Playa... took about 30-35 mins to get to pavement and then an 45 mins to get to Gerlach... some idiot was trying to pass everyone heading to town causing traffic to stop constantly. Then it was an easy drive at speed limit to I80... Lot of smoke and haze on US 50 coming across to Colorado from forest fires... lot of Hot Shots everywhere.
From out of a dream I rode to beyond the Horizon. Got Adventure? The Zen Gear One Meteior Crater surrounded by a lot of roos, emus, Yowies, drop bears and one major flood in the driest desert on Earth... There still was a bottle of red with dinner.

Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
Left camp at 7:08am Sunday, did not ever come to a complete stop. Rolled at limit all the way to where the lanes merge from 4-2-1, where we slowed. Hit pavement at 7:41am. Pavement was slow until Nixon where the RV that was only going about 40-45 mph finally turned off. That guy definitely slowed the highway down. Nobody in front of him, but a snake of vehicles behind...

The difference was the signal light at the pavement, and not "flaggers" who want to chit chat, and have no idea how to flag traffic.
What other people think about you is none of your business.
Re: Exodus 2014 - how long did it take you?
We left camp at noon on Sunday, and hit the pavement 45 minutes later. Best exodus ever, but I was kinda bummed that we didn't have at least one "pulse", so we could get out and party with our fellow Burners one last time

Left camp at 7:05am Monday. Never stopped. 38 mins to the pavement. It was like a dream. Where did all the cars go? Last year same departure time gave a 7 hour exodus.
I hope it stays like this.

Left around 6:30 on Monday morning. Only traffic snag was a guy on a moped who couldn't go more than about 45 on the highway back to Fernley, but I got a good laugh out how stoked he looked as he drove along.
There is no one right way to Burn, but there are certainly a handful of wrong ways.
