I think it would be really interesting if Burning Man were to declare one year to be a "live music only" year. It could be any type of music, but music would not be permitted if it is pre-recorded. I think it would cause a massive reorganization of the participation at the event around actual artistic expression, not just pressing a play button and beat matching.
INB4: this isn't a new idea.
INB4: the Org doesn't read eplaya.
(I know both these things. I'm just in a mood to discuss it with other people.)

Re: Live Music Only Year
It is SUPER expensive for live bands to bring equipment out. Most playa live bands have a whole separate playa rig just for burning man. Its a much bigger endeavor than DJ equipment.
You could however, plan a year at burning man where YOU see only live music. I have done it successfully! There is plenty to see and do.
Electronic music sounds so freakin amazing out in Black Rock, it is absolutely the best venue for it on earth I believe. I love electronic music...when I am at burning man.
I dont like how the sound camps have gotten overly big and so rampant, but I believe electronic music is the main heart of the city.
If you want a burner like experience but want it to be live music focused, check out my favorite live music festival. Its been around for almost 25 years and even has a few burning man type DJs in there (very few) for good measure. It is also the closest larger camping music festival to Black Rock. www.highsierramusic.com
High Sierra Music Festival
This is a destination spot for die hards who are of all age groups and freak style. Casual/freaky/whatever. The range of music is amazing, and it is very interactive if you play music, too. Tons of interactive playshops, camps, and gifting going on. Not too hippy, not commercial. Comical and emotional. It is an UNPRETENTIOUS SHREDFEST.
I actually prefer it over Burning Man, it is the main reason I cant do burning man every year, because I already spend a week in Quincy on the 4th of July doing art and being involved with it. been to 15 of them, I highly reccommend it. Kids and adults playing together in a professional community manner.
