They should give out awards at Burning Man.

Best costume, best camp, most-improved camp or participant, etc.
It's what you make it.

Go to thrift store. Buy used trophies: bowling, baseball, ect. Decorate further with glue gun. Give them out as you see fit. i.e. "most annoying 24/7 trance" "costume that busted my gut" "best reuse of useless industrial culture artifact" "tallest stilts."

haha. While the intent of this thread was a joke, that is actually a funny idea. I can just imagine excited camp members now,

"We got a trophy!"
"From who?"
"I don't know! We're Best Camp of 5:00 and Jupiter 2004!!!"

I rather like the Fish's take on it. Not as something 'they should' do thougt, just as something that someone wants to do.

'Official' or 'unofficial' it implies judgement.

Who is the "they"? Lots of camps already make awards to give out, or host specific events that have "winners" of some kind.

I do like the idea of giving out random awards to to other participants. Just another playa gift, imo.

Perhaps. But maybe not. I was trying to get to a sort of ridicuolousness in the execution as a partial erosion of the ostensible purpose and the implied judgement. What if you had a bunch of trophies and an alarm clock programed to go off at random intervals. "This is the award for the camp I was closest to when the clock went off." "This is the only performance going on at this corner of the playa at this second." Or what if you had to give out that trophy and come up with a ligitemate reason. Or how about "best free booze."?

I did toy with some sort of "hot potato" trophy--that has to get passed on, but didn't know how to work it. Maybe random times plus a "LO-Jack" devise built in.

yes, we all judge, but to turn it into performance art is something else. I judge shit out there all the time but I don't go up to the poor sods slaving away and tell them their shit aint cutting it.

You might consider talking to some of the people from Lorax Camp where they did the same thing for several years a while back. They'd go around and judge camps and the response was well taken - for the most part. Some people didn't get it, and felt it was judgemental and feelings were actually hurt. Sure, you can make the case that those folks might grow thicker skins but regardless of the reason for their feelings the fact remains that it left a bad taste in some folks mouths.

the trick, i think, would be to make the awards and the presentation so preposterous that people wouldn't make that mistake.

it'd be funnier, besides.
