What do you want to do next year?

Post by DrYes » Fri Sep 05, 2014 12:05 am

I like Burning Man to be different every year for me, and so far every year (only 5, granted) sticks out pretty distinctly.

Next year I want to:

* Finally manage to go to sleep one night at 10 pm so I can get up at dawn fully rested and ready to take early morning photos. This has been a goal of mine since my second year, and I've yet to manage it.

* Come up with a new personal art project. I've run an art-oriented camp and I do put together videos every year, but I want to do something personal, interactive, and new (at least to me) next year. What I want to do out there is create experiences that draw people into interacting with me.

* Bring less than this year. This year I brought less than last year, and last year I brought less than the year before, which was probably my peak. I'm finding I'm enjoying paring down what I need to bring while still being relatively comfy and having food and costumes. I left many of my costumes at home this year but I could be even more efficient about it, which appeals to me.

Yeah, bring less stuff. Always too much food, clothes and construction material.
And bring, maybe, 100% of a carport, instead of 95% of two carports.
Go over, organize and fix gear and supplies before the night I'm packing to leave for the playa.
I never hang out for anywhere near a couple hours at any camp or bar, that should change. More chillaxin' with people.
Set aside a good part of at least one day supporting the community by infiltrating and interacting with Plug and Plays.

We want to try to make a cool Giraffe.... something, bike for multi-people, golf cart who knows... we want to call it They Safari.
Hopefully we can dress in safari gear and have a fun little go around of exploring the Jungle of Burning Man:)

We will be going into full plan and create mode as soon as wedding is over in March:) Now we have to focus in on the wedding but then all bets are off:)

I want to make more costumes. My sewing machine sat idle a lot this year, and I vow to not do that again. Furry hats, a light up fur vest, something.

I would love to contribute to an art piece. I do live close enough to the bay area to drive and donate some time on weekends. I would love to be envolved in something and even go EA to set up on the playa and work my tushie off.

Heck, I would love to work restoration but I have no idea how to even start that process.

One of my campmates has done this for a few years now. He swears it's worth every penny to not stress the main sale. He does have the $ though. $380 is a lot for me so I may have to just take my chances - but if you can swing it, do it!

I think this year that's going to be a lot of peoples' strategy. I think it might be mine too. After seeing tickets 2 days before going for $2000 before completely selling out on stubhub, it's pretty clear demand was very high. I doubt Raining Man is going to dampen enthusiasm for next year either.

I want to
*Stay up all night. Just once. I am terrible at this. TERRIBLE.
*Build a yurt. Only been dreaming about it for 3 years.
*Buy an early ticket. That whole low-income ticket thing that got me into the Burn my first year? It was amazing. I want to be a part of the fray helping pay it forward.
*Let go.

Agreed. An average rainstorm is not going to frighten people away (it rained in 2010 for about the same amount of time; no obvious repercussions).

It takes an all-day windstorm or two to get the 2009 Effect. You were probably there and remember, DrYes? . . . but for those who do not: Two 8-hour windstorms = attendance drop of 10,000 people the following year.

I think the drop would be less nowadays, because of hype & demand, but I think it would still be measurable.

I just want to get tickets again. We haven't been able to for the last two burns. Hard to plan a project before you can count on getting in.

I think the number of people wanting tickets would drop, but the event would still sell out.

As for next year, I'm planning on going again after a two year break, that's as far as I've gotten at this point.

Own up to the fact that I want to go and plan time off work accordingly.

Tend more bar - a handle of Tito's went pretty far, but I want to do more! MOAR!

Formalize (a bit) serving pancakes, french toast, grilled cheese and other treats to my camp-mates and bar patrons.

Make it out to the trash fence and deeper into deep playa.

See more art and catch more burns. Hard to say I regret any time spent out there but I missed some of the epic shit, for sure. And it ain't coming back like that.

Be in better skateboarding shape so I don't exhaust myself - as quickly.

Geez, so many things.

Next year I will fly to Reno and rent from there.

I'm so excited and proud to have driven 1300 miles roundtrip this year ( . . . what a ride! what an insane rite of passage for a scaredy-cat new driver like me! . . . )

But now that I've proven I could do it--and could do it again if I had to--I think shopping on the fly and wrangling a box truck or cargo van from Reno would be a new kind of challenge . . . as well as a treat. :)

Now that the S.O. has drunk the Kool-aid (and down to the dregs, I might add), it's time to bring the 'rents around.

I'm going to reconstruct my original carport shade structure.

Also I have a new campmate that wants to host the neighborhood more often with snacks, music and drinks. Everybody on that corner knows each other and it's a blast to huddle together now and then. The impromptu parties were non-stop.

We are adding a community tent just for kitchen and 'stuff'. My plastic chests of drawers will be used for food and kitchen implements instead of bras and t-shirts.

My clothes will be in bags of a complete outfit. (Including undergarments). No more searching for a perfect match. All clothes will be in our personal tents. This will make it easier to bring less clothes.

If I looked at my notebook this list would be endless.

Yes! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Chuck - lucky420 and I blended up several pitchers every day and handed it all out on the corner of 6:30 and gold. Nearly caused a few bike accidents with people whoaing up to get some!

I want to build a yurt. and not forget pants.

and maybe not next year, but eventually I want to mount my circular bed somehow onto a vehicle (a golf cart?). and no, it won't spin.
