Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
Meh, I don't believe in that "11th principle" about not messing with other peoples' burns, because that is way too subjective and there are a lot of overly sensitive people in this world.
That said, art cars should simply be required to follow sound ordinances that require that sound levels be reduced dramatically in guaranteed crowded areas (like burn events); otherwise, the sound system must reside well away from these areas. Penalties should be forced shutdowns of the vehicle's sound system, revocation of the driving permit, probation, and future sanctions that prevent such vehicles from returning for a number of years. Similarly, if an MV's operating crew cannot rein in their DJs or other people under their control, for example, preventing them from self-promoting or interfering with people in an abnormal way, the car operators should also be sanctioned.
These are for specific circumstances however. Elsewhere on the playa it is something that really is unenforceable.

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
There are guidelines and rules for MV sound, many choose to ignore them;
this is the point of our discussion.
How can we, as a community (lacking enforcement), make our displeasure clear to those MV's that choose to transgress the community codes in a way that changes the behaviour?
Praise: (nods to Jovankat)
The Bleachers MV was my neighbor this year, I participated twice and hung out with them in their off time.
I have lived with amazing MVs for many years now, and this one is 'doing it right'.
Anyone gets to ride.
8-9 hours each night of positive, hilarious, artful commentary on the playa, its denizens, and the Art.
Dj'd/recorded music is not the focal point. ( they don't park at 10 or 2 for hours on end)
FUN. Laughter. Participation. "Hey, everybody cheer the guy in the leopard tutu" "YAY! LEOPARD TUTUGUY"
Smiles!!!
Canadians.
Love 'em.

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
The DJ definitely self promoted more than once. The virgins in my group were angry and confused that this sort of thing was allowed to happen during the fucking man burn.
Fuck Dancetronauts. I don't care what they do any other day of the year (though none of it seems redeeming in the slightest). They were trying to promote themselves commercially during the fucking man burn.
I hope they're fucking banned from returning.

I wish I knew which MV cranked it up louder just because they were next to Hushville. I was in my tent, so didn't get up to look, but that was painful, even through the earplugs. Means they blasted Kidsville too. Dick move.

it's pretty straight fucking forward...
as clearly stated...
"Mutant Vehicles are subject to the same sound guidelines as theme
camps. Large sound systems are only allowed to play music at an
unrestricted volume in the large-scale sound areas of Black Rock City."
"Drivers and DJs must also be conscious and respectful of art installations or gatherings such as burns"

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
Did anyone else get drowned out by the Sheep MV on Saturday morning just off of the esplanade at 6:00? They certainly were blasting at high volume which was quite annoying. Not sure how people get away with this since they were maybe 100 yards away from first camp....

Yup, Duane and others know how to do that music right.Jorge de la Playa wrote:El Pulpo Mecanico came rolling through our neighborhood on Monday afternoon, with long-time art-cartist Duane Flatmo himself at the wheel, playing Simon & Garfinkle's "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" at a nice moderate Playa-appropriate volume. Night and day from the Dancetronauts' abusive "set" at the Man Burn.
My daughter and I didn't go up to the man burn, pretty much because it seemed like a madhouse out there with the cars. Our temple burn view was obscured by that big scissors lift car. Also during temple burn I was kinda annoyed that some of the sound camps didn't turn off. Seems like many did, but not all.
Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
Oh one positive experience. My daughter and I were out in the deep late at night at the art installation with the balloons being lit by music (forget the name of it). A MV came by, but quickly turned it down when they got close. They were clearly conscious of their intrusion, and acted appropriately.

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
If only the DJs would get together during the week to collaborate on a group soundtrack that could be played leading up to and then following the fire conclave that the art cars could all rebroadcast via say BMIR at pre-adjusted reasonable soundlevels to provide some sort of energy/feedback loop on the burn etc.
This would eliminate douchebaggery, overly obnoxious musical intrusion, encourage music to be played that fits the theme of the burn itself, and not drive everyone insane/make them stabby.
Even better, encourage people to bring small personal radios/ipods/whatever via portable FM transmitters via Wifi streams mounted to each mutant vehicle. That way people can listen individually to what you're playing, or if they so choose, nothing at all or their own personal soundtrack.

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
This is how the New Years Eve fireworks display in Sydney (which is FUCKING AMAZING) works, there's a sound track simulcast at various official viewing points and on the radio. If would be super cool for an official soundtrack commissioned by the org to match the man burn to be transmitted over BMIR. It wouldn't even need all the art cars to particpate to work, people could bring their own radios etc or could make a point of sitting near a car playing BMIR or make a point of not sitting near cars playng other stuff.

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
So don't sit near an art car broadcasting it or bring a radio to lay it yourself...
I thought last year as well that the pyro show seemed to be missing a musical soundtrack. I don't see how it's that different to any of the other *official* themed art the org puts together. I mean surely we'd all agree the official centralised pyro for the man burn is better than a bunch of unsynchronised random smaller pyro displays put on by different groups?

Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
When did the pyro start? It was there by 2001. I can see that people might find the pyro a bit slick, after the DYI years in the 90s. I've heard/read people missing the hay bales that existed before the man base.

Oh if he straight up doesn't like the pyro I could understand that, what I'm finding hard to believe is the idea that someone would be ok with the idea of there being pyro at the man burn but not wanting it to be officially integrated into the burn.

I'd be good with random pyro shows out on the deep playa, shows, not just shooting some crap off, and never over the city, of course. If you catch a show great, if not, so what? I'd also be good with a few flares over the Man to signal the burn, then BAM! Fire! I would also be good without the flame procession beforehand, and I work with a conclave. A unified soundtrack? I WANT TO PUKE! You can't escape the stupid sound vehicles unless you stay away from the burn, so fuck off about "don't sit near an art car". Fuck that, fuck it sideways with a chainsaw, flying fuck it at a rolling donut, take it on a flying fuck to the moon.
How about nothing but drum circles and chanting? Yeah, thought not.

I will check with my perimeter leads, and if their volume did in fact inhibit communications during the Alien Siege Machine burn, I will take it up with the Burning Man Org and DMV (Both). This is a safety issue.
Re: DJ Art Cars And Their Effect On Art
There was an attempt a while back with the whole "Heartbeat of The Man", where a neon heart was inserted into the wickerman and pulsed a beat.
So the drummers and art cars could at least sync a beat. Yeah, right.
Didn't catch on one bit.
Crude Awakening done it right. Bring a 180 dB Air Raid siren and follow it up with 2.4GW of explosive fire.

I genuinely feel that the burn is missing something in the way of an audio component that actually matches the visual display and if someone were able to coordinate with the pyro team to sort that out I'd tune in but I can also accept that not everyone would be into that. I can even do that accepting without having to rudely mouth of at those who do not share my view. For someone who has defended other people's right to burn how they wish to to the point of vehemence in other threads Simon you could really do with taking some time to think about whether it's really necessary to attempt to belittle and insult someone just because they happen to have posted an opinion different to yours.
