Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Since Monday, it's been 'hit the ground running' at work. One huge multi-bridge construction job dropped into my lap. A soil survey is required by Oct.15. Utility clearances MUST be completed by next Monday. I made the appropriate one-call notification a week in advance, and they have 2 daysto mark everything. I field check it, noting locations, and then we go get borings done, and then laboratory samples are submitted to the lab, and lab data goes into the report.
Thursday, I leave for Salem, Missouri for another annual meeting of the Association of Missouri Geologists, my 23rd consecutive year. Friday's field trip.....UNDERGROUND! We will descend 1250' straight down into the Viburnum trend ore body, a major deposit of lead, zinc, silver, and copper. Sampling is allowed on this trip. YES! Back to Salem for the annual banquet and business meeting and another field trip the following day.
I'm STILL cleaning from the playa.

rhino, it's amazing you can hit the ground running. i''v been sitting at work for 3 days and am still in a fog. my eyes look at papers on my desk, but my brain can determine what to do with them. or simply doesn't want to. create my budget for 2015 on the new format? nope.

Unjon, That reminds me: Jill & I came back from temple burn to find the departed neighbors had gifted us a portable jumper cable box gizmo. (We had a newer rental minivan; though the remote key fob battery was dead. Had to get out manual to start the car Monday.)

Well I am waiting for my laundry to cycle while being driven insane by a truck full of generators in the alley outside, noise and poisonous fumes, going for three hours now trying to cook some pesky bed bugs to death in an apartment a couple stories up from me.
So I am having a Miss Jane Marple Moment, courtesy of Graidawg:

Nilasnake, it's borne of necessity that I'm able to do this. Some ADD patients have the developed abilityto go into a highly concentrative state where no noise, person, or situation can bother them; psychologists refer to it as 'hyperfocus', the ability to concentrate on something to the exlclusion of all else. It used to get me into trouble when I was in high school, until Mom came down to the basement to get me one day while I was working on my homework:nilasnake wrote:rhino, it's amazing you can hit the ground running. i''v been sitting at work for 3 days and am still in a fog. my eyes look at papers on my desk, but my brain can determine what to do with them. or simply doesn't want to. create my budget for 2015 on the new format? nope.
"What are you still doing down here in the basement? Oh, your homework....dinner's ready."
my response: " Hm."
Forty-five minutes later I was in the kitchen wondering where supper was, but my English homework was done.
It was a great state of mind later in undergraduate school for paleontology: I still remember the genera of over 200 different fossil organisms, from my favorite bug-eyed trilobite Phacops rana to the archeosponge Archeoscyphia anulata. I aced paleontology.

MDF - the dandelion wine looks wonderful. Where does it get the color?
Rhino - i get your focus. I used to love tests. Sometimes i would come out of a test literally feverish... So elated with knowing stuff... Yeah, i've been called that too.
Tonight its a glass of chardonnay and advil. I really need to remember my age.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Boo on potty pimpers!
Sorry to have missed you too, Yggy, but damn it was great to finally see frankencamper on the playa. I don't think Pani believed me when I told her what it was, then as we rode up she just looked on in amazement "holy shit, it's real!"
Sorry to have missed you as well, MDF.. and quite a few others, too. Was that you with Grai who'd left a note at camp near the end of the week while we were out? I wound up at camp more than I expected (helping to cover things for pizza service, since a couple of our leads had to cancel their burn plans at the last minute), but when I got out I kept heading far out into the playa. Ironically I never got to go into Embrace (closed for private events every time), didn't get to see Eternal Return in action (it was down on the night I found it), and never made it out to Wabi Sabi's amazing observatory (we had some issues with our trike batteries, and the pedaling got insanely tough in those deep playa dunes).
On the plus side, looks like I'll get to check out Eternal Return in action after all. We just got tix to the annual Space Cowboys halloween throwdown - this year it'll not only have some amazing art, but will be a stone's throw from our place.
Okay, time to crank through the last bits of laundry and start making some drinks!

Yes Trilo that was me with Grai & Elorrum, we left some schwag for you & Pani, not as nice as what you make but hey we tried.
I walked by your camp a few times but never found you in or open, oh well, next year was better!!!
And this was the year I found Ygmir in his camp not once but TWICE
and got to eat fresh baked pie made by Little Flower
and, made it out to Eternal Return while Peter Hudson was there tweaking it
and got to see it running in all its glory
so I have no complaints. Best Burn Ever.

What did you do now?
My burn was most excellent and parts of it sucked. As usual.
Middle of the night. So quiet I can hear the cat snoring. Moonlight keeps waking me up. And hot flashes. Dammit. I can feel the air outside my window is cold, but it is not cooling me off. What crap.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
our burn was a little too short, and we did not get to see all of the people we wanted to see either...
we never even made it past 6 oclock except to do perimeter on alien siege.
but we did sit around a lot, with our friends, in the dust, in creaky lawnchairs, drinking warmish beer, and shooting the dusty breeze...
it was fabulous.
we took a quick playa art tour after embrace burn, the playa was cool and cloudy and everybody went to sleep....we woke up at 6 am, had coffee and were perky.....most people had stayed up the whole night...the morning playa was perfect....goldilocks zone...
had coffee with goathead at center camp, and then walked the esplanade all the way down to 2.
at 8-10 am in the morning , there is a stillness to the city that i really like...
i yelled and chased down someone who i thought was Trilo and Pani one night, but it was some german dude and his girlfriend in a space-steam-punk get up...
i don't know if he knew english that well, he looked kinda terrified as i ran up to him yelling "TRILO TRILO"...
Anti M and HerLarry were the first people we saw at the airport, which was magical, as they had beer for us....
i saw SHAM and his car, EspressoDude and his mighty cannon, and most of the sideshow-illumination village burners.
and of course, we stayed at the morris for burn night, which was as adorable as a puppy chasing it's tail...
all in all, pretty damn good...

I had a good Burn, too, Simon, though I regret not finding you out there.
Let me have a virtual drink here, folks, one of many over the next few days I hope, because as of 12 noon EST I go on duty for the next 90 hours, at which point I get a 4-hour break from 8 am to noon on Monday... yikes.

What a touching and beautiful last moments story. I'm so glad he held on until he could be with you. Like you, he no doubt lived his life the way he wanted, and was very proud of you, dear son. Your boundless compassion and strength is now needed for your family. Faith and love is what you and your family can celebrate in memory of your father. The lessons he taught and the example he gave as a man and father will continue, an eternal gift that passes on for generations.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Simon comes to center camp and sees goathead but misses me at the Beacon. Sounds about right....I was all over keeping the Beacon running. Had to go back into Empire before Gate even opened to get a second load of stuff from storage(I packed both my vehicle AND my trailer to the roof both times)and three more times during the burn to get the freshly-printed papers from Reno that are delivered to Empire.
I gave two lectures at Earth Guardians. Mike Bilbo indicated I'll be invited back next year. My answer in advance? Yes, I'll do it.
I attended the M & G, and participated in the 1st Chocolate Martini mixoff.....
I got to the the burn from on high this year as a guest of Earth Guardians, on top of their scaffold. Good pyro, solid burn, but an hour and a half for the Man to fall of it's own accord? They built that baby tough. Had to have been....it weighed 35 tons.
Missed Trilo, but saw Bobzilla and Decibel over at BMIR, goathead and God at Homebrew Camp, and was visited by a myriad of Rangers - tapestry, Kimistry, Philimanjaro, and even got to see Ranger Kiote over at the 12-mile outpost. All in fine form and spirits.
Special note to sunbeam: using your hyperfocus in preparation for the courtroom is an advantage. Have you used it for that?
Love all you kiddies.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
That's okay, I shouted SIMON! loudly at what turned out to be a complete stranger, too.
In a weird way, the missed connections were typical. Every year it seems like I miss connecting with bunches of people I'm really hoping to see, but along the way running into just as many (if not more) people I wasn't expecting to see, and connecting with people I hadn't yet met in person. Or in a few cases, people I see and work with at HQ all the time, but never get to spend time with on the playa.
MDF, the rubber stamp bar/pickles/lemonade was open a lot less this year than last. Since we had Space & Thyme (which is a delivery operation, no walk-ups) and two of the three leads ended up missing the burn with last minute cancellations, we had to devote more resources into making sure that went smoothly. Both because we needed to make sure the dough and supplies got used but because it required a lot more care from a health department standpoint. We also had a lot fewer pickles this year, since the 1 gallon jars we'd been getting at the local warehouse joint are no longer available. In past years we'd leave the rubber stamps out for people to 'self serve' - but after a few went missing last year it became something we felt should only be done when there was someone available to 'work the counter' (which I prefer, since it makes for great interactions and connections).
I never went into Center Camp, but was popping in and out of Media Mecca all week, but never got to check out the other camps in the ring or visiting Rhino, Mitch, and Rocky at the Beacon.

Rocky and I were there. Mitch didn't make it this year, though he was there in spirit and in the articles.trilobyte wrote:I never went into Center Camp, but was popping in and out of Media Mecca all week, but never got to check out the other camps in the ring or visiting Rhino, Mitch, and Rocky at the Beacon.

Decompression sucks for the first time ever. Having your best burn ever and then coming home to various work crises is not what I would recommend. So I'm biting the bullet. Going to go to St. Croix in January for a few days of drinking on the beach at our condo. Anyone want to join me? The airfare is expensive but the lodging is free.
