interesting, Zul.

part of me really likes it, largely because it is a positive, active step: as Guin said, a proposal instead of a whine.

i need more time with it though because i wonder what the feasibility is of having 100% community decision making. that said, i'm all about the idea in general and it shouldn't be impossible.

i do also wonder how much of BuMP's time is taken up with legalities and suchlike.

one more thing: would this be enough to meet the main demands we've been hearing, do you think? would it go far enough? it seems like the things people are railing about are deeper and broader than this proposal addresses.

I found this whole con to be self serving and narrow minded.

Funding? Who gets fuckin money for their shit? Don't we just show up and build stuff?

I don't tend to have a lot of faith in there being one magic pill to fix the perceived problems. I do think it could work to pump up the art, and spread out the variety of what would appear to be officially sanctioned art. As for city planning, that could be a real mess. True chaos with the number of people that attend, could easily turn deadly in a big way, not to mention souring even more the working relationship with all of the Leos and BLM that has been established.

It also seems like no mater how they make noises about different groups doing the curateing it will end up with the bay area people taking it over just because of logistics and travel costs, would that make the art even more Baycentric particularly if money is involved?

Jason, my man... Have a shot of this single malt, and relax.... Le jour est fini! There are very few things that a few sips of a single malt are unable to cure....

Of course, there are many things that a whole bottle of single malt can cause... c'est la vie...

I haven't read the art thread, but today at work I came up with my idea for a piece of random art that is going up on the playa next year... with or without sanction. It's simple, cheap, makes a statement, and pretty much gives people a place to gather out in the middle of nowhere.

Excuse me while I wander out and read that thread...

Enjoy the single malt, Jason.

m'kay. my two cents on the art curating thing:

#1 - the only art that the borg 'curates' is the art it funds and the art that gets placed prominently on the walk to the man. nobody ever stops anyone from doing anything big and artistic - they just won't necessarily pay for it or place it in the aforementioned places. which makes the proposal sound a little bit like 'give us money and let us do whatever the fuck we want with it'.

#2 - BM is NOT solely about the art. the art is one of the many very cool results of a temporary autonomous zone allowing for (forgive me) radical self-expression.

Okay... I'm back. Two things:
  • Stuie! Right on! I have a very simple idea whose time has come... I'll PM you. We'll talk... we'll have a meeting... I'll have my people call your people (wait a minute! I don't have any people!)

Tisha: A real apology if we bothered you with our drunken prattle Sunday morning, but it really was done out of love. So far, you are the only Women of the Four that I haven't made an ass of myself with. I genuinely wanted that opportunity. One more knee-in-the-nuts would give me a table setting for four, plus a nifty gift (a truss). And I really was trying to get through the phone to you.
Now, as for the manifesto: it is sheer crap with a heavy dose of bullshit, politics, greed, and more crap (of the equine variety). It is a ham handed attempt to grab some of the kitty (neither feline nor feminine genital regions here) and play with it. They should be ashamed of themselves. IF they were genuinely passionate about the fucking art, they would just do it, and money be damned. Paid art is prostituted (no offence to Kristy, who I see as a genuine, loving, public servant who is about ten steps above any analyst I ever met!) and is lazy. Why was there bad art on the Playa this year? Because they were trying to do art for someone else instead of themselves. The best art comes from the soul, and if you are trying to fill the soul with the green instead of the vision, you've missed the fucking point.

I've done a shit load of theatre (a bunch!) and the best theatre I've done was for the love of it; the worst, for the money. I watched one theatre in my home town turn from a very good theatre to a very mediocre one. I did a version of State Fair that was technically (in both the acting and the presentation) very good, but on the whole was mediocre, because that is what makes money!! Jesus-in-a-fucking-jumpsuit, I hated that show. I felt like an absolute piece of shit. I'M A FUCKING ARTIST, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!! WHAT THE FUCK WAS I THINKING!!?? I was thinking about the money. Fuck me.... just 'fuck me'. (this belongs on the confession thread)

So, thanks for putting up with my rant. I'm very serious about it, and I feel it's time for the guerilla artists (or 'artistes') to make a comeback. After all, the spirit of Burning Man is not "What do you want me to do? (*whimper, whimper*), it is simply TO DO!

Could I get another single malt.... and maybe a Prozac? (I get sooooo excited... )
