THEME SUGGESTIONS FOR 2015

Carnival Of Mirrors asks three essential questions: within our media-saturated world, where products and people, consumption and communion morph into an endlessly diverting spectacle, who is the trickster, who is being tricked, and how might we discover who we really are?

The animal must be entirely of one color, and there is a series of tests listed by the rabbis to ensure this; for instance, the hair of the cow must be absolutely straight (to ensure that the cow had not previously been yoked, as this is a disqualifier). According to Jewish tradition, only nine Red Heifers were actually slaughtered in the period extending from Moses to the destruction of the Second Temple. Mishnah Parah recounts eight, stating that Moses prepared the first, Ezra the second, Simon the Just and Yochanan the High Priest prepared two each, and Elioenai ben HaQayaph and Hanameel the Egyptian prepared one each (Mishna Parah 3:5).

The absolute rarity of the animal, combined with the detailed ritual in which it is used, have given the Red Heifer special status in Jewish tradition. It is cited as the prime example of a ḥok, or biblical law for which there is no apparent logic, and is therefore deemed of absolute Divine origin. Because the state of ritual purity obtained through the ashes of a Red Heifer is a necessary prerequisite for participating in Temple service, efforts have been made in modern times by Jews wishing for biblical ritual purity (see tumah and taharah) and in anticipation of the building of The Third Temple to locate a red heifer and recreate the ritual. However, multiple candidates have been disqualified, as late as 2002.

Simon: Google "red brangus". Best I can tell from your post, it meets all the criteria. Very common here in Texas.

Behavior of those things is... well.... Lets just say it got the worst of both parent breeds.

Interestingly, I nailed half of the base genetics needed to produce such an animal per the video you posted in another thread. Your disgust with the location aside, I can almost guarantee you the genetics came from here, and judging from the head and shoulder conformation, likely not too far back, either.

The sire was a Gelbvieh, which is interesting. My first guess based on statistics would have been Limosin or Simmental, as many crosses with the Gelb's are just a color mess, and the breed has its roots in dark colored hooves, which are dominant. Another contender (oddly) for the sire would have been a 'Red Factor' Charolais. The animal is whitish, but crosses with a Red Angus to produce a solid, light red.

Regardless, she's a pretty girl. If she makes a bunch of folks happy, then I'm happy!

Edited to add: Thread drift.

There's a huge Brangus spread up the road from me near Moberly, Missouri. Good cattle, and tasty beef.

What I fail to understand, however, is the term "polled" as in 'polled Hereford' . I know this isn't what happens, but my mind's eye sees someone from the Nielsen Corp. with a clipboard asking the various individual cattle questions about their television habits........
