Burning Man was better next year

Post by bm_cricket » Sat Sep 13, 2014 11:59 am

What's the best thing you did this year? What's the worst? I mean to ask, what is that single most magical moment you had this year when you said "Why didn't I do this before?" or "Why didn't I experience this before?!"

Or, on the other end of the spectrum, what's the single worst thing you did. Maybe "I forgot zip ties" or "It turns out that along with the rest of me, my bladder is getting older too!"

So, tell. Share with me.

Oh, and the whole point of this is because next year I plan to do it better!
It was better next year. -Burners

I remembered the zip ties but forgot a pair of dykes to cut them off with. Luckily ne of my neighbors had a pair. The magical moment had to do with me being a magician, a hidden button and led bracelets - can't explain - you had to be there to see the expressions on peoples faces. I'll definitely do it again next year if the opportunity presents itself.

I want a trike.

A cold crispy salad everyday. Awesome.

We didn't really forget anything, though we did lose the travel trailer in New Mexico. Ken says we left it on Route 66. Plan g ended up being a tent under a monkeyhut with a uhaul trailer in the end of it. Worked fantastic and that's how we plan to do it every year.

TamaraKay, this year AntiM & HerLarry gifted me two trikes. One of them was promptly "adopted" by Sadie, and you can have the other one next year.

And we now have 11 months to work on a two-seat trike, or your American Speedster.

Forgot toilet paper...cut down my choices of porta-potties and pooping schedule significantly. I never went unwiped though.

I'm right there with you! Worksman Electric Port-o-trike is on my list. Next year is a huge upgrade for my infrastructure... hopefully adding a camper trailer, honda EU2000i, and said trike.

My magical "wow" moment was the first time I started running my FIGJAM cooler in my tent. I had come back from a very long night and morning out on the playa, it was 9am, and I figured I was doomed. I turned my cooler on, waited a minute, topped it off with some ice, and promptly had some of the most comfortable sleep I've ever had on Playa. FIGJAM coolers - Voodoo.

The basics (shelter, water, food ) were planned well in advance. Most of that worked as expected.
What happened was... All the little stuff that i threw on top at the last minute was REALLY useful. A nail brush - used to scrub dishes. A shoe holder hanging thingie - was great for keeping hygiene things up and separate from clothes on the floor. Electric blankets... Saved propane thar had been designated for heating.
A plastic menu cover to set out carb and ingredients list for tamalez (next year ill make an eating guide - you take the corn husk off).
That last walk thru Walmart in Fernley yielded treasures!

Trikes rule...

Thanks AnitM+HerLarry/Elliot for making one available for me to use. I brought a bike, but had a couple of near wipe-outs the first night I rode...(dang dunes!) - the older I get the harder I fall...
So, if I don't achieve my own three wheeled transport between now and next year I will absolutely spend some quality time with my adopted steed.

Next year I do all my own wiring for my costumes. I soldered in a break away connection on my vest's LEDs this year, and when it started to flicker with movement I thought I'd somehow fucked it up. Nope. Factory cold soldered a connection further up the line. I was able to track down soldering supplies and power to run them, but soldering without any form of windbreak during intermittent white outs was... interesting.

It's cheaper, I get better materials, better control... fuck, there's no reason not to just do it all myself next year. I just need to start earlier.
