"Serf" seems more accurate given the accounts that are coming out.

Well no, these people are simply at their regular job, voluntarily working for a paycheck just like the rest of us who aren't independently wealthy. It just so happens that they are working on-location in BRC.

In Kinetic Sculpture Racing we call them Peons. It's on the entry form -- $35 entry fee for Pilots, $25 for Pit Crew, and $15 for Peons.gaminwench wrote:...

Alas, I doubt fate will grant me the privilege to bear witness, but at some point out on the playa there's going to be some Feather Head-Dressed wearing douche calling a Free-the-Sherpa activist a racist.

Probably "Burning Man Personal Assistant" is an accurate title, leading us to "burnpa."

Unnecessary appropriation, for sure. Who says, "Jew someone down" or "get gypped" any more? How are those different from calling the hired help "sherpa"?
The Sherpas of Nepal are not a race, they're a ethnic group of about 152,000 people in Nepal. For your reading education:

Somehow, I don't think so.
Bottom line: We are all human beings. People. Homo sapiens.
There is, to me, no color line, no line of sexual orientation, no line of gender, none of the things in the past that caused people to discriminate against individuals or groups. It's a hard lesson to learn well, but one worth learning.

Good. Then I'm in the right place as a professional scientist.tummler wrote:I thought this was the geeking out about the nuances of language and terminology thread.
There has been, for a number of years, a trend in the literature to expand the vocabulary to make it less-than-accessible to the non-scientist by using words with Greek and Latin roots. Instead of 'algal mound' we say 'stromatolite' and so on. I question the excessive use of such terminology if it doesn't add to or enhance the understanding of the science. For after all, calling a shovel a "geotome' doesn't make it any sharper.

No, but it does mean that the government will buy geotomes @ $150/each instead of shovels @ $12/ea.^Rhino! wrote: For after all, calling a shovel a "geotome' doesn't make it any sharper.

Re: Is calling a turnkey employee a "sherpa" racist?
The only hand tools that I know of that cost that much are made of pure beryllium, which doesn't spark. That's a critical thing in underground mining, especially in areas where there's methane concentrations just above the lower explosive limit.Doctor VonBacon wrote:No, but it does mean that the government will buy geotomes @ $150/each instead of shovels @ $12/ea.^Rhino! wrote: For after all, calling a shovel a "geotome' doesn't make it any sharper.

I wasn't so sure until I considered having buttons made up to gift that had the word "Sherpa" on it with a big red slash thru it, it was either that or the term "No Sherpas".
Both ways it felt, to me, kinda racist.
