Hey BaR! It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood. Playing whack-a-mole with fears, and getting some skill at keeping them down while enjoying the larger possibles. I'll be doing roll call of who wants a cross country travel visit, and what that might look like. I do not want to impose on anyone. Solo Bad-Ass can travel. Looks like I"ll be heading out in early Nov, or Late Oct. (less likely)
Told a co-worker that I wasn't going to talk about "it" (his desire to have a long angry argument) said, "I'm done, bye bye" and hung up on him. FELT SO FRIGGING GOOD! Friday is my last day at work.
Sadie, yay! cub scouts. You must be the coolest grandma! They'll learn a lot I'm sure.
MDF, what are you drinking? Something cool, or something more to the point?

Into the great wide open you go! How cool is that?! - What a great feeling to say "this conversation is OVER"...come on Friday..countdown is ON.

I hope you can make a zig or zag through Texas. You are welcome here any time.

The little turdlet has camped before, as have I, but this will be our first time to camp together! Should be interesting and fun. The big draw for him is the opportunity to earn some stinkin' badges! He's pretty excited about the uniform too.

Hmmmm.....costumes....schwag...... I think he has pretty strong burner potential....

Yes, you ARE fuckin' fantastic.

Help in corruption: Tell the kids about the old Humphrey Bogart movie, "Treasure of Sierra Madre". In the movie, some Mexican banditos try to get the map from Bogart by telling him that they are 'Federales'

Bogart's reply: 'Well, if you're federales, then where are your badges?"
Lead bandito (pulling his gun): "Badges, badges, we don' need no stinkin' badges"

I told that story to a group of Boy Scouts on a campout one year. At their next rank advancement, they come up before the assistant scoutmaster in front of a crowd of parents and get their rank advancements and merit badges. This particular ceremony had the rank advancements and the merit badges separately given out.

The assistant scoutmaster said, "Now it's time to recognize these young men for all the hard work they've done since the last advancement by handing out the merit badges that they've earned."
Heard from the back of the room was a young man's voice, high pitched and 12-year-old-ish:
"Badges, badges, we don' need no stinkin' badges!"

Chaos reigned, and I, as the scoutmaster, smiled knowingly.

People tend to forget how that scene played out -- Bogart and companions handily win the ensuing shootout. Then the scene was replayed by Redford and Newman in Butch and Sundance, where the banditos didn't even get off a single round, enshrining "We don't need no steenken badges" at the top of the list of infamous last words.

When we return, our next movie trivia question is about a piano player named Sam. ....

I was moved by the stories of that slave cemetery that they found in NYC a few years back. I think there's a whole bunch of interesting research that could be done. Of course, the descendants might not like that...

good morning bar, i finally managed to wake up at a time conducive to GMT. now i need to find an excuse as to why i havent phoned my mum for 5 days. she's going to be so disapointed in me. oh well.

MDF, good on you for being so hardcore, let me know my share of costs. And have some rum. thats you have some rum not me - after the disaster of my duty free rum i'm not risking any.

however iceland does sell some fancy highland park so that will be on the next visit. (iceland the country not the shop for english visitors to this bar)

how i wish i could go on that road trip with you ellorum

Elliot, this looks like this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship....

Never forget the Wierd Al Yankovic movie 'UHF', and the program on their TV station, "Raoul's Wild Kingdom". The pet store is bringing by the exotic animals for the program - a cople of skunks, an armadillo, and yes, you guessed it, a couple of BADGERS. Leading to the classic line,

"Badgers, badgers, we don' need no steenking badgers....."

And with that corruption I leave you smiling, I hope.

Good one! (Three different people have used the name Badger, in some variation, on ePlaya in recent years, that I am aware of. (Those would be "the usual suspects".) )
And for those young folks who have never seen the great Bogart movies like Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Casablanca, and African Queen.... You "need" to seen these astonishingly well-made films. In Sierra Madre, Bogart's shovel becomes visibly more worn as the movie progresses. Somebody took the time and trouble to grind the tip of the shovel down to illustrate the great effort put into Bogart's search for gold.

Mmmm fluid dynamic simulation... thanks for the link, Figgy, that page is a lot of fun.

Congratulations, Elorrum!!

I'm waking up still feeling full. A couple hours after a big meal yesterday, my girlfriend decided to try her hand at making another tarte tatin (a glorious Apple-y, pastry dish), it proved not only delicious but irresistible and I ate way more than I should.
