You know you're getting jaded when...

Post by RedHeaven » Tue Sep 16, 2014 11:56 am

...when you get annoyed at the cute lip sync videos that come out every year after the burn (like the "Home" one...I just watched the "Born This Way" one and it prompted me to start this dumb thread)

...when you start rolling your eyes at "Burning Man changed my life" and instead you tend to say "Burning man ruined my life"

...when you truly honestly think to yourself, shit, it was better last year.

...when the waste factor and/or spectator etc. factor starts to annoy the consciousness

...when you stop going?

I actually started this thread to console in others who were feeling a little jaded, possibly confused or annoyed with Burning Man, or perhaps cannot make it back and are looking for reasons to feel good about that. haha

It was hard to miss 2 in a row, but sometimes it doesn't bother me. Sometimes it does!

I want to go back and give my all towards my camp that I love and know and the city as a whole, but I would have to admit i was doing it for some hedonistic reasons, turn a blind eye to the politics and changes that make me personally feel uncomfortable. Who knows, maybe I wouldnt give a shit, maybe I would.

All in all, when it comes down to it, I am really glad this has all become a part of my life. It certainly has enriched it in being an escape AND a practice. But i also wish to knock it down a few pegs, because the great stuff is so great it just makes me feel so black and white sometimes.

I tell my off-playa fellow male-hetro friend about how this woman wiped out on her bike in front of the camp, lay spread out in the road, she was smashed and not really hurt, her friend was with her, cops and medical response, she walked away, it was a mini-adventure, etc etc etc.

Finishing the story, in reflection, I realize I never mentioned to my buddy, yeah, both ladies were topless. At the time, it was no big deal.

When you stop calling it home.

I personally have never called, or thought of Burningman as "home".

My home is where my family, dogs, and my shop are. Burningman is just a 3 week activity in the middle of the other 49 weeks of my life.

Ranger Magnum summed it up almost perfect.

when what seems to hold the most weight in your mind about the trip are packing, setting up, taking down, packing, un-packing, cleaning, storing.

You know you're jaded when you can't decide if you really want to go or not next year.....
I COULD go, but I would have to give up a LOT to go. And I don't know if I want to give up other things.
I can't do Burning Man half assed, but I could do it minimal. I was just offered a good solid ride from a friend next year. I only live 4 hours away but getting there is crucial as I don't want to ruin my honda. The playa already took the life of my truck. So thats a big chunk of hassle I dont have to worry about.....But is my heart in it?

I feel like I used to love the city more when most the people around me were vets or old timers and I was a newb. Now its DRASTICALLY not like that. But I know where the pockets are.
But do I want to hide in those pockets all week? Last time I went I spent a lot of time at Hair of the Dog. But I had a fucking GREAT time!!!
Just getting dusty and doing shitty open mikes is worth it alone....and rocking the burbs with all those old time kooks.

I just feel like the raves are starting to really bother me. And I love some of that music and have had fun out there....but it just seems like TOO MUCH now.
I could ignore them but they get harder to ignore.
If I go I would be a snarky fuck!! BUt I would rock it!! I would just have to let go

You know youre jaded if you are worried about being part of a cliche` like Burning Man can be.....Or how it can all be so overly ABSURD that I might go into an Absurdity Worm Hole where none of it makes sense anymore. I would just have to let it go....

But what to do? I have a great time whether I go to BRC or not. But I love how BRC changes my dreams and makes me get involved with other people and things than I would if I didnt go. The inspiration is wonderful but I am inspired even without attending burning man again. Shit I did 7 years, unless I was going to get further involved in the city or camps there or a project, whats the use?

T L / D R yeah I know!! But I needed somewhere to bounce off my thoughts so eplaya it is. Thanks for listening if you did. Dumb stuff to think about. FIRST WORLD PROB MCGEE

You're not conflicted at all. If you were conflicted you wouldn't have had to post this. You really want to go. See you at next year's eplaya Meet-n-Greet.

That settles that. 8) :D

OY!
I asked my good buds who went out this year if they had any bouts of this feeling during the week, and they all reported yes. But they really didn't mean it. It has gone through my head every time I have gone, actually. But when you really mean it, hmmmm. Yeah.

DOH! You already know me so well ;) A trusty friend just made me his ride partner for the Burn next year (which was a huge obstacle for me to get back), AND a friend I volunteer with on the high sierra music festival ambiance team and is affiliated with the flaming lotus girls just offered me a volunteer position in BRC next year.

Well fuck me, see you at the meet and greet! Is it OK if I bring a bullhorn and yell jaded shit at newbies on the corner of 5:00 and Esplanade? Do you get tasered for doing that kind of stuff these days? Its been a few years.

You know you're jaded when you feel like you need to teach the new soul searchers the snarky side of the city. Anyone see that quiz going around on Facebook? One of those really dumb quizzes 'What Kind of Burner are you?" And there are virtually NO answers that say Jaded Snarker, Shirt Cocker, Sparkle Pony, Excited Burgin, nothing. Its all "Soul Searcher"....."The Raver"....."The Artist"......Fucking nonsense I tell ya! ;)

I never thought of it as home, or any of the other new-age mystical crap. It's one element of Burning Man that annoyed me from the beginning; that and the white trash/fratboy/douchebag element.

I think about Burning Man all year long, but I don't wear costumes or have fancy art projects (I'd like to do something one day). I don't drink or do drugs (on or off the playa). I don't have a "playa bike." Tamara Kay is transporting a "real bike" for me. I don't do a lot of "burner" things, but I still look forward to it and still have a good time.
