For providing all the information that helped my enjoy my first burn. We used a 10x10 Kodiak tent under a Creative Shelters rig, held to the ground with concrete form stakes and duct tape. Very easy to set up and take down. Great in the rain!

The one thing I would change, is DON'T DRIVE ALL THE WAY FROM NEW YORK! Actually I thought it was sort of fun but my girlfriend was ready to knit herself a noose.

By the way, if anyone is driving from the east along Rt 80 and has some extra time, the Ruby mountains near Loiselle (northeastern nevada) are fan-freekin-tastic for a day hike. Just drive to the end of the "scenic drive" park, and walk a few miles. Amazing scenery and there is nobody there.

Anyway, next year I was thinking of just flying to Reno and renting a camper. Will I get banned for thinking that? There is a container that goes from New Jersey for burners, but its about 4 hours from where I live (upstate) and I can't really think of any other way to do it....

I always fly in from the east coast and ship two large microwave size boxes to the hotel. I pack 2 large suitcases with the rest of my stuff and I make that work for me. It can be done easily. Been doing it for years.

Real burners live on the west coast in Nevada in Gerlach wherever the fuck they please and do what it takes to get their shit out into the desert when the time comes. Glad you had a great first time, thrilled that this bunch of rambling so-and-sos was able to make it better in some small way. For the record, the fact that you're even researching the container now, 11 months out, means you're doing it right. Anyone gives you guff, fuck 'em.

Looks like you got it right the first time. Guy lines are awesome for decapitation. If your anchoring is solid, no need for tie downs.

I usually ship a large carton via UPS to my storage locker as it is cheaper than the gas and tolls to get my shit to and from the container in Jersey City.

Speaking of which - renting a storage locker in Reno or Fernley is a great way to avoid having to transport so much stuff.

I realize that for every day I've spent on the playa you probably have a full week on me (at least), but the structural engineer in me respectfully disagrees. It will do wonders to keep the poles from bending, especially since he has those nice flat walls to catch the wind. As for decapitation, mark them with day-glow paracord done in big, easy to spot loops and/or put them in places people have no sane reason to walk.

Most RV places won't rent for Burning Man, for good reason, (people trash them) and the ones that do get completely booked, early.

I was just going to post the same thing - RV's in Reno, the SF Bay area, LA & Sacramento tend to go very fast - we usually rent our RV for the following year the week we get back. They sell out of RVs for the event sometime in Oct/ Nov, if memory serves from last year.

Just remember that they lie lie lie about how many people an RV can hold - a 5 person RV is good for 3 tops (and one might end up sleeping in the "kiddie bed" that the table converts into), a 7 person RV will hold 5 (if two pair are couples - or very close)

And that table bed is bullshit, let me tell you. I tried using it in the RV I drove to/from the event for another burner. I had an easier time sleeping in the passenger seat of the RV (driver side couldn't recline as far because of a bulkhead).

as long as I remember what I learned from DPW, Ill stick with T-posts...anyways...duct tape and cut slits in the tarps and they wont bend metal. http://www.emisupplies.com/images/ft_t_post.gif

Lots of east coasters. Hit up your regionals and you might find more ways of getting stuff schlepped across the country.

Yeah, a couple guy lines could be tucked in an X in the solid wall section. No decapitation.

As for flying in, look at Boise or Salt Lake City. More rental availability, less awareness of the event, and it is a day's drive, which lets you get in the mood playing spot the burner. Adds a couple days to the trip, but if that is no problem, it allows for more flexibility.

The weather on the playa during the event the last few years has been easy on us. This is a fluke. Look at the rolled trailers in the LEO compound pre-event this year as a point of reference as to what can be typical.

When the big weather comes, you're going to be glad you had guy lines. Or for the truly insane, T-posts.

yeah you were close. I just corrected you so others can visit if they'd like. There's a little chapel up there somewhere that people use to get married in.

Thanks all for the tips on campers. Driving from Salt lake is sort of a cool idea... this year I took down camp right after the Embrace burn (I had to drive home and be ready to teach classes on Tuesday), left at 11 and made it to Salt lake city that night.
