That's actually good advice for people coming from a distance within the US as well. We drive up from Los Angeles and stay in Carson City for a day to do almost all of our shopping. There is almost every store you need in that town.

You should probably be answering that question yourself, as the only things you should be bringing across the border is what you can't buy here. Often those are souvenirs or things you want to give away.

Hell, I priced out the cost of water, and the gas alone to transport it from the tap to the playa isn't worth the cost of just buying it or filling up at the hotel on the way in.

Fying in from the East Coast, let me echo this advice. The only food I fly with is stuff I made myself or that which I'm really concerned I won't find in Reno. Schedule a night in Reno. Every year I schedule and plan my shopping trips and think it will take several hours less than it actually does. And this was my third year when I knew where everything was.

in my experience, customs inspections seems to be aimed more aimed at fruits and vegetables (that which can harm the agricultural industry) than any packaged foods or foods they consider unsafe for human consumption(that which will probably just harm you). I've smuggled raw milk cheese from France and have never been caught.

Unless there's stuff you're worried you won't be able to get here just do your shopping in the US.

This is exactly what we were thinking, if we had to COOK something, it could be done in the parking lot of a walmart or something on a basic camp stove.

Buy it, cook it if needed, drive to playa and party. The less cooking I have to do the better...

If I arrived in Reno on the Saturday Aug 29 with the aim of travelling to the festival the day after would the stores around that area still be well stocked? Someone told me before that 'they heard' from another burner that the stores are usually sold out of most items that close to the festival. Any truth in that?

No - at least not for basics, and even a lot of specialty items.
This has been going on for 2(7?) years now, Reno is well prepared for us and our money. There will be huge displays in all the major stores, big piles in the aisles with beer, chips, sundries, snacks, there will be specials - hell, you can even plan on getting good coconut water in Reno now, which wasn't the case even five years ago. They are ready for us. If you have special dietary needs (beyond basic vegetarian/ vegan) you might have to put a little more work in, but you should be okay for anything less than that.
