When my meager stash of canned food runs out, I can eat my neighbor's cats. They will be plump from feasting on her, and unsuspecting because I pet them. See? I have a plan.

Ah, a tourist. That explains a lot. Ebola is such a brittle virus in humans, I could not figure out how the dude got it.

I don't want to sound hysterical, but... should we really allow travel from Ebola impacted countries into the US? Hell, the UK doesn't even allow animals from outside the UK to prevent rabies. I'm not sure why a highly contagious virus that kills 40% of humans that contract it would be treated differently. Or, maybe at a minimum quarantine people for 21 days (the incubation period) after arrival from those countries? I suppose the cats out of the bag now though. Let's just hope the new reports that children were exposed in Dallas doesn't actually result in any new cases.

OK, I have first person experience with hemorrhagic fevers. In 1989 I spent a week in an induced coma with Korean Hemorrhagic Fever (hantavirus). Most of that time I had a 105.9 degree fever. They woke me when it broke.

The interesting thing about most (if not all) hemorrhagic fevers is that that they are brittle. They don't survive outside of a host except under specific circumstances. With KHF, it can only survive and be communicable in rodent urine soaked dust. It is frequently carried by rodents from site to site and rarely transmitted to humans. You need to be in a very dusty environment with a reasonably large infected rodent population.

While it's true that they don't know the exact vector or reservoir of ebola. It is highly unlikely that that reservoir could easily be duplicated in the United States, given that both the vector and reservoir are the product of very rural African villages. While I would not want to be in the room with an infected patient without double gloving and wearing a respirator, prior to having symptoms, he would not have been contagious. There is also a chance that (given the variety of strains of ebola) he might not be contagious even in full blown symptomatic ebola.

That said, we're all gonna die of something and I already used up my "Get out of Hemorrhagic Fever Free" card.

This is one of the scariest articles I ever read: Arctic methane will cause extinction.
http://www.thenation.com/article/177614 ... -emergency

I just found out about it a few months ago. My older sister who is an expert in peak oil, gloom & doom said she studied the CH4 theory and doesn't believe it. She sees no alternative to oil and expects SHTF is a few years. I think "they" can keep the party going until the sewers in Miami don't work (sea-level rise), that's the beginning of the end.

What else can you expect when so much of a country's population is illiterate, looks down on higher education and puts more faith in god than science?

I contracted Dengue fever in the jungles of Costa Rica in 2005. First symptoms came on as I was 35,000 feet over Cuba. Not "communicable". Got stuck in a fog-in in Atlanta for the night, I laid out in the bathtub in a flea-bag motel with all the ice the machine had. There really isn't any treatment or "cure", you just need to shake it out. I shook it out. Scary. Reduced me to a pool of jello, couldn't fend for myself, wanted to die. It was "free", as in: why pay doctors and nurses to watch you writhe in agony for a week? Did it at home, got out pretty much for "free". Got it from a mosquito bite while grilling some mahi-mahi up in the jungle. (thanks for the reminder, I have not thought of the event in a while)....
