Eric: Mama always said "If it acts like a crab, put it in water". I was just trying to "help". (Go with it. hehehe)

But I see your point.

So. Who wants to storm these silly buggers with leaf blowers?

It was worth saying what Eric said, just so no one reading this doesn't get it.

My first choice choice be to petition for their DMV permit denied if enough people substantiate the stories here.
Building a "gunship" is mostly joking around for fun.

Now, back to specific details about how to construct an effective jammer, if that was a good idea ...

Don't some forms of EM temporarily disrupt electronic equipment (especially more sensitive/unshielded stuff like DJ decks)?

Back when I was in high school I had a WIRED mouse on my computer that apparently put out enough of an EM field that it was audible in the speakers on the nearby CD boombox when CD's were playing.

Tech solutions for people problems aren't a great way to go.

Their noise machine is stating they feel their music has more importance than any interactions that go on around them.

Your EM/Jammer is stating you feel your will has more importance than their music.

It's "tech" but is pretty much just trying to shout louder than the other guy.

I suggest a fleet of cars with interlocking angled baffles that can circle an offending vehicles and reflect most of the offending noise to the sky.

You wouldn't even need to encircle them, you could just drive the baffler right up in front of the sound wall (since most sound walls face one direction) and muffle the sound into nothingness.

Come to think of it, if you were to position a sound canceling art car between the sound wall and the audience, you could effectively cancel the audio as it passes through your vehicle with speakers aligned in the same direction emitting an inverted sound wave.

It's a nice thought, but very difficult to do without the same sound power as the original source, and nearly impossible with sound bouncing around in all directions.

Policy is probably the best solution. I guess enforcing existing policy would work. But one new rule could solve almost all of it: DJ art cars can park near the Man burn if they want, but their main speaker array must point away from the Man.

In that case I go back to my nuking from orbit suggestion.

The idea of an active jammer or EMP-type weapon isnt such a good idea. Folks with pacemakers or insulin pumps, assuming they survived, would likely have a few choice words for you.

I like leaf blowers. The dust and wind are natural elements. They just get a bit more targetted in the hands of the right gardners!

Has anyone used a ring of jet engines to create an artificial tornado at Burning Man yet?

If anyone is not sure what "speech jamming" really means, play around with http://stutterbox.co.uk/ (webapp) for a bit - it's amazing what just a little bit of reverb/delay will do to your brain.

It's not really a hi-tech solution to the Dancetronauts' volume so much as "you're being an obnoxious fucktard and I hope you can take a bit of what you dish out so readily"

Other considerations are what happens if you managed to hit someone with say a pacemaker, or a scooter that needs it for mobility, or a sparkle pony...

Don't do anything that gives them a chance to play victim. Most of the suggestions have been about going after their vehicle or their sound in someway, which (a) is really skirting what's allowed on ePlaya and (b) is giving them an easy way to come off as the "injured party".

What you want to do is point out that they're being assholes without becoming one yourself. Take a look at the ideas being generated in the Plug N Play thread, figure out ways to use them on art cars (pickets, public shaming, etc)

Simon, thanks for the prod. I just sent a message to the DMV because I'm still smarting over the insulting way those Dancetronauts jerks blundered into the space next to the beautiful sculpture "Squared". There was a big crowd enjoying the lights and classical music from the sculpture and BLAM/SLAM/BLAST/HONK/LOOOKATMEMEME! comes out of Dancetronauts rig. I fully respect everyone's right to personal expression and everyone else's right to NOT accept your aggressive art gift be it visual or audio etc. Yes, go ahead and make dance parties where you like but stay the FUCK away from other people's art. It's rude, stupid, and it makes people hate you!...sorry Simon, still angry at them.

Our art car weaponized music on the playa by playing 80s soft rock. Nothing like some Air Supply or a track of Dreamweaver to clear out an area.

Aw BBadger you old softy, snort!

Actually it's not so much what style is played but how loud it is. I love me some punk rock but I hate anything that vibrates up my spine. It's not an old person/young person debate it's a sensitivity issue. If something is louder than everything else within a mile, no one can experience anything but it. It taints all it comes into contact with. It's an audio virus, an ear worm, it's just TOOO FUCKING LOUD! Like the org says here:

http://www.burningman.com/on_the_playa/ ... olicy.html

"We have also seen an increase in the number of Mutant Vehicles with sound systems of a size and power that would normally be designed for a stadium or arena. While the volume of these types of systems can be more easily assessed and appropriately placed when they are stationary in a Theme Camp, when they are on Mutant Vehicles they can be taken anywhere on the playa and pointed in any direction, making a cone of sound that may be heard by literally tens of thousands of people at a time. This creates a situation where one person or group is essentially forcing their music choice onto many others who may not want to hear it, are trying to enjoy other music, sleep, etc."

It seems to me this size of sound system should not be mobile. That would help. I doubt very much that Mutant Vehicle creators will try to make smaller, quieter, less flamey vehicles. It's always bigger, louder, more outrageous...etc. Nope, I don't see this changing on it's own. It requires enough push back from folks who are fed up by it. Where can I sign up to help the DMV police sound levels? :-)

Yeah! Throw in some Phillip Collins or a little Extreme for a lights out performance.

Wow, they're on it. I already got a personal response from the DMV. They are following up on multiple reports of obnoxious sound behavior (and potential sound rules violations) by Dancetronauts. If you witnessed any asshattery by them please let the [email protected] know. Things may actually change!

Now this is an excellent idea. Some Wilson Phillips "Hold On" played in a loop never hurt anybody.
