hello from st. louis, missouri !!

Post by silas thatcher » Sun Oct 05, 2014 11:48 pm

hello everyone :) the wife and i are hoping to attend in 2016... next year is simply too busy for us to even try... been reading the forum for a bit and learning lots from all the helpful hints and tips...figure that i might need a year to gather, make, or buy everything to make our camp...
we also do a bit of reenacting so camping out is easy for us... if i can accomplish it, my profile pic is from a recent event in st. augustine, fla.

will chat with every one later :)

Welcome Silas and the Mrs.... Boy o boy. If I had TWO years to get ready I would have to buy a bigger truck to haul it all. Unless you are 100% organized less is better. If you do a little research, you can get all your questions answered here. Somebody can even tell you where your missing socks are hiding. Welcome to you both.

Howdy. I was born in St. Louie. You do a bit of re-enacting? You might already have a good lead on costumes if you don't mind them getting dirty. Do you participate in Civil War events? We may need an army of the emancipation come 2016.

my reenacting is more towards a sailor in the 1680's to 1720's that has fallen on the dark side sea fairing adventures... on the side of being period correct as opposed to hollywood and johnny depp ( don't get me wrong... pirates of the carribean got me into this silly hobby )
been doing alot of reading and research on what people pack and how to set up a camp that will work out well...i figure over the next two years, i will slowly accumulate all that i want to bring and have time to test it all out so i don't end up like some people do... ( or am i over thinking this whole thing ??? i tend to over pack anyway and end up making a list of what i will leave at home the next time only to pack it all anyway... )
thanks for the welcoming !!

18 year old and i are certified for 4 and 5 man cannon crew, black powder pistol trained and sword fighting trained.... yeah, i know... complete geeks !! but we have fun... besides, what other 18 year old can say that they are certified to shoot black powder cannons ??

an army of emancipation ?? hmmm...who we liberating ?? or what are we taking over ??

getting anything i wear, dirty ?? like i said, we strive to be period correct, so over time, my clothes have been torn, patched, stained.... they look filthy after a few years... i rinse them once in a while and let them hang out in the sun... accurate portrayal kinda thing...

What fibers did they use for clothes? Ah, well, by the time they got to an ordinary sailor, they'd have gone down a ladder. Or did the navy provide? And, of course, a moderately successful pirate would have access to some class stuff--if odd ensembles. Yes, I"m every bit as uselessly random when you have a post directed at you, as I am when you're just reading my posts.

Of course, at the burn it's all flame cannons. I fear a cannon ball might tear up the trash fence and let the trash in...

Oh man, those canons don't have to shoot the ball, just the flame will do. You may really want to look into that. (I'm sure there all kinds of regulations regarding it, but you got time to iron it all out.) There are so many boat mutant vehicles sailing the playa sea just crying out for a broadside and boarding.

We had a wanna-be Jedi master in our camp this year, and you, sheesh, think YOU"RE a geek?

Amazing. She got it on her second try. As regards THIS pirate (me - remember the pic of me with the Jolly Roger that today flies in my living room) I can help this sea dog out.

Item 1. You have St. Louis area burners....scads of them. They are all good people. They are known collectively as "Gateway Burners" and have frequent meets and greets. THIS weekend, they have their art show downtown on the landing called ARTICA, but the best time to catch them is at their meet and greets. The NEXT ONE is tomorrow night, October 8. It's at Bad Dog, behind White Castle at the corner of Manchester and Vandeventer. The announcement reads:

"
ATTENTION MEETERS & GREETERS!! The location of Gateway Burners' weekly Meet & Greet has changed... Come join us tomorrow night at Bad Dog at the corner of Manchester & Vandeventer, just behind the White Castle... Fire allowed INSIDE!! Patio, indoor stage, three bars, pool tables, darts, cheap beers and great food!!"

Got it?

They also operate Pandora's Fix-It Shop on the playa, which has been on Rod's Road the past couple of years.

Your other option is the Kansas City,MO/Lawrence, Kansas bunch known as Midwest Burners. Any questions? PM me, and I'll get the information to you post haste.

cannons would be cool and would put on a good show... BUT ...... gotta figure in the small percentage of people that can't refrain from ruining others' stuff, and fun... NOT a good scenario with potential weapons...

rhino, no time this week to hook up with them... thanks for the heads up... will have to make it a priority when life decides it will give me a break for a bit...

silas, joeln only gets half credit (if that much) for his characterization of us as 'Southern'.

Sure, we do barbecue, but I hadbn't even heard of shrimp grits until just last year.

During the Civil War, Missouri came in on the Southern side. UNTIL the Union decided that was unacceptable and sent Hamilton Gamble to become governor In Jefferson City. A southern-leaning "government in exile" was set up in Newtonia in the far west corner of the state. The amount of territory that they controlled was negligible.

I've shoveled snow to get to a BBQ pit before.

And grits?
A taste best garnered as a youth. Good with maple syrup, butter, a pinch of salt, and cheese as possible additions. Shrimp grits, though?

silas, one other thing occurred to me on the drive home today, and I thought it might be pertinent to you, us, whatever.

Regionals prior to the big burn are REAL important, if nothing else to link up with folks who are of like mind and can help answer your questions and give you ideas. Some of us have been to the playa more than a few times, and can help you minimize any misery that you might chance experience.

Rule #1, though...Burningman is a DO-ocracy. You want to do something special, it's up to YOU to build it up into a big deal, and recruit others to aid you in your pursuits if needed. I started the Black Rock City Division of Geology on a whim in 2009, and now it's slowly becoming a minor institution. One great by product of it...I give out shot glasses every year with the words, "Veni, Vidi, Pertudi" (We Came, We Saw, We Drilled) on them. I made myself Chief Geologist and bottle washer because I pay for the shot glasses....the Golden Rule in this case is, "I supplied the gold, I make the rules".

Burningman is a place to pursue and live your dreams, and help others pursue and live theirs. It's not a utopia by a long shot, but you'll go home a changed person.

Now, for the meat of what I'm going to tell you. You have an ideal opportunity to experience burner spirit at its finest by attending the Midwest Regional, Interfuse. First, go to this website and register:
http://midwestburners.com/
There's a kickoff dinner in Kansas City on January 24. All participants are invited as we plan yet another year.

When tickets go on sale, get however many you need, follow the map to the event site, and get ready for the time of your life!

Hope to see you there!

And if not, STILL.....I hope to meet you before or ON the playa.

I like grits, plain, butter, gravy. Never had grits with maple syrup. Sounds good. I put syrup on oatmeal.
I wouldn't be able to handle shrimp. Don't like fish, seafood etc.
