Do we have any evidence that dogs can serve as a vector? If they can, don't you think we'd know? Totally gratuitous dog murder...

Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
My latest reading tells me that the CDC still does not know the possible vectors for Ebola. They have identified a likely reservoir in the bats that are prevalent in the regions of Africa with Ebola outbreaks.
Not knowing the vector puts the WHO and CDC at a strong disadvantage, as transmission directly from a reservoir species (through say, a bite) is uncommon.
So, it's anybody's guess whether the dog could be a carrier of the disease.

Unless there were no dogs around in previous outbreaks, I think we'd know if they were vectors.

Despite international
Opposition, the dog has been killed.
There is no
Evidence dogs can communicate the disease to humans.

Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
I have read, though I can't remember where, that they have evidence to indicate that dogs can be asymptomatic carriers of the disease, though there is no evidence to indicate that they can transmit it to humans. I'm sorry that they had to put the dog down but I think in this case it's better safe than sorry. Ebola's not one to mess with.

Unless you have a workable solution to the Ebola issue, should you really be discussing it at all? Why bother? Wouldn't it be so much nicer to discuss the weather and what you had for lunch?
Besides, I don't have ebola, you don't have ebola. Enjoy your own life, things take care of themselves. This does not involve us.............yet.
Some of the clowns I've seen on-line are in a debate whether Ebola or ISIS is the greater threat to us, as if it's a contest. Once the terrorists weaponize West Nile bird flu Ebola, it will truly be Armageddon time.
I'm having my dogs fit for full head to tail HAZMAT suits tomorrow.

Vehicle passes....that is the real threat !!!!!!!!!unjonharley wrote:There, unplonked you long enough to fix that for you..
I would never plonk someone, I enjoy reading all kinds of opinions, as long as it's not authoritarian stooges filling up my pm box, but that's my recipe for disaster.
Just glad you made it in the gate this year, what with all the vehicle pass issues weighing so heavy in the air. I think I remember some old coots whining about that issue prior to the burn....
And I'm glad you caught on to the metaphor.

Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
And they swear up and down she followed CDC protocols. Double-triple yikes!Sunbeam56 wrote:Another patient in Dallas. Another nurse with a dog
It sounds like this nurse was conscientious about her physical health and caught the symptoms very early on, meaning the chances she spread it are slim. Unfortunately that 21 day clock has just been reset for the US. It sounds like Duncan's family may be out of danger at this point, so that's good.
Unfortunately though according to the WHO, there is a 7 week period post-illness where the person is still infectious:
The World Health Organization wrote:People are infectious as long as their blood and secretions contain the virus. For this reason, infected patients receive close monitoring from medical professionals and receive laboratory tests to ensure the virus is no longer circulating in their systems before they return home. When the medical professionals determine it is okay for the patient to return home, they are no longer infectious and cannot infect anyone else in their communities. Men who have recovered from the illness can still spread the virus to their partner through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery. For this reason, it is important for men to avoid sexual intercourse for at least 7 weeks after recovery or to wear condoms if having sexual intercourse during 7 weeks after recovery.

Dude, if you survived Ebola and feel fit enough for sex less than two months after you recover, you're super-human! Then again, what woman is going to want to come near you anyway? The World Health Organization wrote:Men who have recovered from the illness can still spread the virus to their partner through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery. Re: PANIC!! Button of DOOOOOM!
That does not bode well for the countries where birth control (condoms) are rarely used. In really poor countries where people have very few distractions from their sufferings sex plays a major role in daily life. That and the fact that having a male offspring is of utmost importance. Of course I'm basing this on things I've read rather than actually being in Africa. However I did spend four months in the Fiji islands and sexually transmitted disease was a major problem among the youth. I believe it was syphilis that was the issue there.chuckularone wrote:The World Health Organization wrote:Men who have recovered from the illness can still spread the virus to their partner through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery.
