We're hoping for some rain today! yay that!

so, for any botanists here, I found what I think is a very strange occurrence, while clearing the super old and thick ivy making a new parking are for one of my tenants:
a few stumps, of trees cut down even before I moved here (17 years ago), are still alive! Cedar stumps. They have actually "healed" growing new wood and bark to cover their cambium layer, while the center rotted out. The wood and bark are alive and green....but there are no limbs at all, and they are just "stumps"........many a foot or two tall, up to 18" diameter.
WTF? I've never seen a stump from an evergreen, especially that size live at all, let alone heal and seemingly survive what seems over 20 years........I'm wondering, with this clearing, if they'll "sprout", or die? wonder if they somehow got nutrient and such from the ivy that overwhelmed them and sunk small roots in? got their sun vitamins?
