Indeed. The Leatherman is my favorite knife tool as well. I have a micro (2 blade) Swiss Army knife, 2 of the regular 4-blade, etc, but all pale in comparison to the Leatherman, even combined. Gerber used to make one with attachments for screwdriver types, hexkeys, etc., but it was a real klutzy arrangement. The two-blade Swiss is good for a letter opener, little else.theCryptofishist wrote:You know, the whole pliers thing has me firmly converted to the leatherman.magicmarty wrote:Not a Swiss Guard, but I never leave home without my Swiss Army knife. Hell of an instrument, Fishy
I've actually installed ceiling fans with nothing more than a Leatherman and a roll of electrical tape.

Long time no see.
Taking a break from shampooing the carpets.
How's everyone doing!?
My new job kicks ass, great benifits and it's nice to be able to work from home. Got an industrial serger machine, got in s fight with it and it won. Spent some time in the ER. Thank god john was home to take me. Other then that pretty dull on my home front

Hello Friends..
Happy Belated Birthday, Aserendipity!!
Seems everyone is busying around nicely...
I survived the cub scouting and didn't say fuck (out loud)...and in my opinion, some of those ears need to be notched.
There were about 100 campers including the parents and siblings of scouts. Lots of little boys running around willy nilly swinging sticks and kicking soccer balls. No eye gougings, amazingly. (meanwhile, most of the dad's were sitting around in the shade gossiping...
)
The latrine made the JOTS at BRC seem luxurious by comparison...
- yay for pee jugs...just sayin.
It was great fun to spend the week-end with the grand-kid. He reported that his 1st favorite thing about the trip was not having to take a shower, and the 2nd favorite was camping with Nana.
I am also happy to report that his baby sister is feeling much better. She has that nasty cough on the run and is back to her happy smiling self. Was great to cuddle her for a bit today.
Annnd we're back to Monday again. Hope everyone has a great week.

Well, Burn the River was by all accounts a great success! lots of happy folks, only one pretty major injury, an accident during set up (feel better, Twist)!
Educated a few "heavily altered" hippies in the impracticality of sneaking and, and the much more comfortable method of paying for a ticket.. Not many though, really. Pretty dang good for all!
Got some sort of allergic reaction in my left eye though, dang it hurts and is red........pouring boric acid, warm compresses, and closing it, hoping to fix it all up.

Really looking forward the the Amtrackathon, and then the Burnal Equinox!!!.........

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
hehe good one UJH.
yeah boric acid is a long tested eye wash/disinfectant. Of course it can be over used, but, I only use it when trying to avoid infection and such.
I'm sorta thinking it was a big allergic reaction on top of irritation.
it's going away fast, and I have forgotten my allergy pills and nasal spray while down there.
now, I need ideas: I'm making a studio apartment in my basement, which has a concrete floor.
it does not flood, but in very wet winters, there is some moisture in the concrete.
I'm trying to come up with a fun floor idea, that will handle some moisture.......
the concrete does not get wet, or water on the surface, but you can tell there is moisture. It has a foot of pea gravel under and has drainage down both sides, I can only assume some water must get into the space below and vapor intrude the slab
any thoughts?

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
would it work to put industrial kitchen grade rubber mats down first, then maybe cover that with a floating laminate plank flooring?
The mats I am thinking of are about 1.25" or 1.5" thick, maybe 4' x 4' square..very sturdy, and have little 1 inch holes all over them.
That might breathe enough to avoid mold/mildew...and a floating floor would be easier to take up if you had to.
Is there such a thing as square pvc tubing? A framework to create a small space between the cement and flooring... I guess round would work if you could secure it from rolling somehow...

heh.. on first read, I thought this said "pink" flooring. Sure would fit in the definition of "fun", I guess. For someone.sadie wrote:would it work to put industrial kitchen grade rubber mats down first, then maybe cover that with a floating laminate plank flooring?
ygmir, trot over to Home Despot and check out the Dricore 2'x2'x7/8" Aspen subfloor panels. They interlock, have a plastic layer underneath with raised nibs/feet, and keep a layer of air between the concrete and panel. I used them to build a voice-over booth in a place I lived in about 10 years ago and they worked very, very well.
Additionally, The Despot has rolls of cork underlayment, 200sf for $128.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Sounds like moisture is coming through the concrete by vapor pressure. Trying to seal the floor with paint, even epoxy won't work. Vapor pressure will eventually push through and paint will peel off. Plastic or flooring you lay on top of the concrete will eventually peel, become wet and start to mold.now, I need ideas: I'm making a studio apartment in my basement, which has a concrete floor.

Try laying pressure treated sleepers on top of the concrete and a standart subfloor/ floor on the sleepers. If you hold the subfloor back from two walls an inch or so you might give the moisture a way out. If more air is needed ducting along one side and a fan hooked to a humidistat in the floor would keep the concrete dry.
Everyone is so politically fucked up that they're segregating themselves in the name of equal rights and liberation.

Didn’t do Burn The River, but had an event here in town, called Spirits On The Loch, with a Steampunk theme. Between Marek Lechowski, Peter Wagner, Mike Ransom, and me; we had 11 pedal-powered exhibits, 7 of which could be ridden by the public. (12 if we count Millicent, which served as backdrop and storm-shelter.) The event was hampered by rain and wind on Saturday, but Sunday was perfect.
And several Burners identified themselves as such when we got to talking.
Children in this cultural-backwater-town have a desperate need to be exposed to creativity and accomplishment, which makes it worth the effort to put on a good show here.
On that note... I met a couple shining examples of local families who are doing it right -- parents who are actually teaching their children how to live.

Ah, moisture. The dishwasher has been leaking for some weeks (maybe months), down through the wooden subfloor into the wooden ceiling of the basement. We would not have known for a long time if Larry hadn't happened to be in the basement when the dishwasher was running and he heard the dripping. Pulled down the ceiling and water poured on him.
We now have a dishwasher shaped hole in the cabinets and a new dishwasher ordered from Lowe's, and a floor which is drying. Coupled weeks should do it, plus some caulking and anti-mildew treatment.

boric acid dusted all over the wet stuff will work wonders, and is non toxic in those amounts. You can also dissolve some in water and spray, or for better effect, dissolve in non toxic (due to your cats) antifreeze, bring to a boil, let cool and spray right away.......it's "hygroscopic" and will get pulled into any wood and towards moisture.AntiM wrote:Ah, moisture. cheapest boric acid powder I've found is through soap makers sites.....even plain borax (20 DA Mule team) works as well.
