If the floor of your house was dirt, you were "dirt poor".

the threshold was a piece of wood laid in the doorway to keep the straw on your dirt floor inside.

A board to hold the threshing/straw in the house.. It was used on wooden floors so you would not slip and fall..

Dirt floors were kept clean by sweeping..

"DIRT POOR" - Dates back to the 1930's Depression era where there was extreme poverty and many people lived in dirty conditions. Some people say it dates back to England in the 1500's where finished floors were rare, but this origin has not been proven.

"PISS POOR" - They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in the same pot to collect as much urine as possible. Why? Because once a day, someone from the family took the pot to the tannery and sold the urine. If a family had to do this to survive financially, they were called "Piss poor."

In the 1500s.. Having a wood floor was upper class..

In the 1940s. The Benette family up the road from our house had a dirt floor.. It stayed that way until lighting took it out in 1956.. They were truly dirt poor..

People of Pompeii would set there piss jugs out in the morning to be collected..
The collector would take the pee to the laundry.. The laundries were stone pools..
Put the laundry in with the pee and stomp until clean.. The acid would break down the greasy food stuff.. You would have to be pretty poor to be a laundry stomper..

Another acting term. It has something to do with the lights they used in the 19th century. I assume they burned from quicklime or something like that.

"Yanking my chain."

Coal mines in the old days had dunny carts for the miners to relieve themselves in.

The carts were on the same tracks as the coal cars and they would throw a chain around a wheel to keep it stationary.

A favorite prank was to remove the chain while someone was using the cart and it would roll down the tunnel.

Hence, "Don't yank my chain!!!"

If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

Come with the Sat. night bath.. heating enough water was a task... So the whole family used the same #3 tub of water.. The last in for a wash was the baby of the family.. The water was pretty black by then.. The above is correct..

The phrase balls to the wall, meaning an all-out effort, comes from the world of aviation. On an airplane, the handles controlling the throttle and the fuel mixture are often topped with ball-shaped grips, referred to by pilots as (what else?) balls. Pushing the balls forward, close to the front wall of the cockpit increases the amount of fuel going to the engines and results in the highest possible speed.

I wonder if it is Hells' Bells or Hells' Belles. Would not Satan use a gong and bagpipes?

Hell's Bells is my guess. And a gong is a kind of bell--metal that is struck with something to create a noise that resonates...

I"m guessing it's contrasting to church bells somehow... Or maybe just a catchy rhyme.
I think this is totally spurious, but it does open up a nice parallel to the burn.

Birds carry plant seeds and drop them in various places where they germinate and grow into new plants. Bees pollinate the flowers by carrying the pollen from one blooms anther to another blooms pistil, thus fertilization. When a young girl reaches puberty she," blooms into a fertile woman". The male plants his seed and it, "pollinates" the females egg and a child begins to form in her womb. Didn't you learn this in the," special", meeting in Jr. high? :D
